Is A Recumbent Electric Bike Right for You? Recumbent EBikes Are Great for Adults & Seniors

Is a recumbent electric bike right for you? All the information you'll need to know to make the right choice. Hey everyone, I'm Dustin. I have nearly 20 years of experience in the bike and e-bike industry. Today, we're going to talk about recumbent e-bikes that are right for you. Right here we have the Relaxed Body Recumbent E-Bike. Now, I know what a lot of you are going to say. It's not a recumbent. I do classify it as a recumbent because I say a recumbent is something where you're pedaling out in front of your body. Now, there are lay-down recumbents, this is also a recumbent. You're very low to the ground. You can drop that seat down another five inches, and the pedals are moved significantly out in front of your body. So the benefit to a recumbent is you get to be lower to the ground, lower step-over height, and easier to mount and dismount. So the question is, is it right for you? Well, a couple of things you'd have to consider if you're opting for a recumbent. Number One, if you do want something lower to the ground that has a lower seat height, easy to mount and dismount, a recumbent is a great option.

Now, also the difference between a recumbent and a regular e-bike is that the pedals on a regular bike will be sitting directly below your seat. So in that circumstance, you're going to be pedaling straight below your hips. On a recumbent, you're going to be pedaling either in a complete lay-down position or with your hips more out in front of your body. Now, depends on what you prefer, what you like. This is a very comfortable pedaling position, I will say. Now, what you do lose with this pedal position is a little bit of torque you can get on the pedals. When you are in a more upright position, it's more efficient for power and getting power into the pedals. However, with an electric, you obviously can make up that difference by using the electric assist when you pedal. And again, if you're a rider who's not concerned with going ultra-fast, this is a very comfortable riding position. Now, the other cool thing about this one, in particular, is you can adjust these handlebars in and out of your body so you're able to find the right arm position that is right for you. Everything else on a recumbent e-bike's gonna be the same that you'll find on any other e-bike, right? It's just about the riding position.

A lot of people who prefer this type of e-bike are a couple of different types of riders. Now, number one, a lot of people just like this riding position, right? A more stretched-out appearance. Taller guys, it's good, because they can get good arm extension or people in general who just like to be lower to the ground, right? Being lower to the ground is a nice safety feature. When you're stopped, you can also have your feet flat because you're getting that leg extension by pedaling out in front of your body. In addition to that, you can have more control over the bike when you're stopped as well. So if the weight of an e-bike is something that scares you, having something like a recumbent might be a good choice for you because, as your feet are lower to the ground, you can control the bike a little bit better. After all, the bike's not sitting up so high. So a little bit less risk for the bike to tip over or topple over. Also, for you to get on and off much easier, so you don't catch your leg on the top tube, things like that. But again, if you're someone who wants to be higher up, maybe you like that pedal position, then a recumbent wouldn't be a good choice for you. But I'll tell you what, recumbents comfort-wise, I think are unmatched. And particularly the relaxed body, you can dial it into your particular body and body type. So I think number one is choosing what's right for you, your physical ability, and your body as well, because you want something that will feel right for you. So you're going to enjoy getting out and riding it. That's another thing, too.

If you are someone who struggles with mounting and dismounting a bicycle because of how high the tubes and the seats are, a recumbent might be a good choice because it's gonna eliminate that fear of the mounting and dismounting, which is going to put less stress onto you when you go out for rides and you'll just enjoy it that much more.
