Why Mobility is so Important for Seniors? And How Electric Tricycles are Impacting Senior Mobility

Why is mobility for seniors so important, and how are electric trikes impacting that? Hey everyone, I'm Dustin. I have nearly 20 years of experience in the bike and e-bike industry. Today we're gonna talk about why mobility for seniors is so important and how electric trikes are positively impacting that. All right, before I get into it, I've got two awesome e-trikes right here. The Simple Glide 500-watt and 750-watt models the fat tires, mobility for seniors is a big topic. For many countries, cities across the country. I've started to get in touch with a lot of cities, particularly in Southern California, and there are many senior cities, senior centers in cities across the country that provide different services, activities for the senior community. One of the hot topics is mobility because the senior centers can't have seniors there unless they can get to the senior center.

the question for many of these cities is, how do we get more seniors to the senior centers to enjoy the activities, interact with others, and stay in a positive mindset as we're aging? Many cities do provide transportation. Some vans or buses will pick up seniors from their homes and drive them to senior centers, or arrange other activities, driving to particular shopping centers. But when you do that, you're obviously on the schedule of the shuttle or the bus that is provided by the city. Many seniors have lost the ability to drive, or they just choose not to drive anymore, and unfortunately, for the seniors who can't drive anymore, many are just at home daily and not able to get out and about. Unfortunately, This also leads to depression in many seniors who are forced to stay home because they're not out interacting with others and living their lives. So the idea of mobility is so important. I mean, not just for seniors, for all of us, all adults and children. Imagine if we lost our ability to be mobile.

We couldn't walk to the store or drive somewhere or ride our bike somewhere to go and do the things that we enjoy most, whether it's out shopping or out to an activity or just out to the beach or whatever it may be. The beautiful thing about electric trikes now is that they're another form of transportation that is available to seniors, expanding what seniors can do to get themselves places. We've encountered many seniors who have just found out about electric trikes, and they have lost the ability to drive and have become reinvigorated now with finding electric trikes because it's a great transportation tool. The benefit of an electric trike versus a mobility scooter is that electric trikes can go much faster, 16 miles an hour versus five miles an hour or even three miles an hour for many mobility scooters. Seniors can now also exercise their legs while getting assistance from a motor to help them if they so choose to get exercise. The electric can assist you, or you can twist a throttle on an electric trike that will power the trike without you pedaling. So you have the option of getting a little exercise or not.

So now, we're also getting the senior community to get more active and work their legs out more than ever before. The other cool thing is the range that you can go on these. So you can go up to 50 miles, and any of these can go in bike lanes in any city across the country. You can also, depending on your city, if you're a senior, you can ride on the sidewalk if it is your mobility device, just like a mobility scooter. Now you'd have to travel at an acceptable speed to do that safely, but you can do that. The other cool thing about these is that you can go on hard-pack trails or off-roading. So if there's a trail that you loved through the wilderness or at a local park, maybe even just riding on the grass. Electric trikes, specifically these two, can do that no problem at all. So enjoy those rides out at the park. The mobility scooters, many of them, driving on grass is not really what they're equipped for. And even if you do, you're gonna be going at a very slow pace. So again, if you're somebody who maybe just lost your balance and you can't drive, but you could balance or you could steer a tricycle, now you can regain all of that mobility that you've lost.

The other thing, too, is affordability. Many seniors maybe can't afford cars anymore. It comes with insurance and all these other things. To have an electric tricycle, no insurance is required, more affordable. You can also find payment plans, things like that. And now you have your mobility back. You don't have to pass a driving test to get on an electric tricycle, and you can still go to the store one, two, or three miles away. Now, you're not going to be making trips necessarily, you know, over 20 miles, and maybe even 10 miles is pushing it for you. However, the range on these is up to 50 miles. So, if you do want to get out and make long-range trips, that option is available to you. The maintenance is very little on these. They're easy to maintain. They are safe. They're balanced. These two in particular, you also have these high back seats here, provide ample support and armrests, and backrests, so you can cruise around. And really, I believe that electric trikes are going to play a major role in keeping our senior population not only physically more healthy, but also mentally more healthy so we can utilize these to get more seniors out of their house, get them to the local community, get them to the senior center, interacting with others, and still doing all the things that they enjoy about life. So, as humans, mobility is really at the center of who we are and what keeps us happy.
