Why are Recumbent Trike Bikes are the Safest Electric Tricycle? Stable & Comfortable ETrikes

Why is a recumbent tricycle bicycle the safest trike out there? Hey everyone, I'm Dustin. I have nearly 20 years of experience in the bike and e-bike industry. And today I'm gonna talk about why a recumbent tricycle bicycle is the safest type of trike out there. Right here, I've got the Simple Glide Fat Tire Recumbent E-Trike. So this is an electric recumbent trike, really awesome, really fun to ride. Now, a lot of people opt for recumbent tricycles, because they're lower to the ground and honestly, much safer, and I'll explain why. So, on a typical trike, you're not pedaling out in front of your body. You are pedaling directly below your hips. So, to get proper leg extension on a typical tricycle, you have to be able to raise and lower the seat, which you could still do on recumbents for many of them, but for many of them, you can't raise or lower the seat. You can generally only slide it forward or backward. So what this means is to get proper leg extension on a typical tricycle, you're going to have to raise the seat, and oftentimes you're going to need to have your feet like this when they're planted on the ground. So otherwise, you're going to be too low, and you're not going to get great leg extension. It's going to be hard on your knees if you're riding a trike. So with a recumbent, you can see you're pedaling out in front of your body.

There are different variations of recumbent. I classify a recumbent as any trike that you're pedaling out in front of your body, and you can see the pedals are significantly out in front of the rider's body on this one. Now, there are other recumbents where you are even lower to the ground, lay-down recumbents, full recumbents, and lots of different recumbent positions. So there are a couple of reasons why they're so safe. One, you're very low to the ground, right? So getting on and off is going to be extremely easy versus having to climb onto a seat that might be raised significantly higher. In addition to that, let's just say something wrong happens. You do crash or get into an accident, hypothetically. If you were to fall off, you'd be falling from a very low point compared to if you tipped over on a standard trike, you're gonna be falling from higher up. The risk increases if you're falling off a regular trike versus a recumbent trike, and in some of the more lay-down recumbent trikes, you're very close to the ground, right? You might only be lying down or sitting down as high as this actual bar is. So let's just say in a worst-case scenario, you did fall off. The likelihood of causing major damage is very low compared to falling off a higher seat. So it can give you that peace of mind, make you feel safer. In addition to that is the stability. So with a more compact trike, more upright, it's not going to have the wheel length that you'd have on a recumbent.

So you can see the axle-to-axle length on this e-trike is longer than most of the upright e-trikes, and other recumbents even lay-down ones, where you're pedaling even farther out in front of your body, are even going to be longer than this. So that's just going to add to the overall stability, make cornering easy, make cornering better. So, another thing to consider as well. Now, regular trikes, depending on the geometry and how they're built, are safe as well. They may just require a little more of a learning curve as you learn how to shift and lean your body while you're riding to ensure you keep all three wheels down. Now we sell both, there are ways to make the more upright trikes safe. Just overall, because you're lengthening the wheelbase on a recumbent, it does add to that stability and safety. Now, you can see on the Simple Glide here, we've also got fat tires, which adds to the stability of this one as well. It's very stable and very easy to turn. The other thing, too, is that the seats on recumbents are typically much larger. A couple of benefits. Number one, very comfortable, but number two, it keeps you on the seat, right? So there's no risk of you sliding off or falling off, slipping out. You're not going to slip out of this seat. And most of the other recumbents as well, your whole body is really on the seat. So adds to that safety. Also really, really increases the comfort level.

So that pretty much sums up why recumbent trikes are so safe. If you have any other questions at all, reach out to us at theteam@sixthreezero.com or call us at 310-982-2877.
