Where To Ride: Best Biking Trails In Houston
Everything is bigger in Texas, including opportunities for adventure. If you feel heavy after a BBQ-fueled dinner, wake up the next day and go for a ride. There are tons of places to bike in Houston! From easy, breezy leisure trails to more challenging routes, there is bound to be a bike trail for you. Here are five of our favorites:
- Jack Brooks Park Trail
Distance: 5.6 miles
This loop is about an hour south of Houston, but it’s worth the drive if you want to mountain bike in the area. The one-way trail weaves tightly through the forest and offers sharp curves and varying terrain. Ride safely through this sometimes-muddy trail (it may be shut down for a few days after heavy rain).
- Buffalo Bayou Hike and Bike Trail
Distance: 5 miles
If you’re more interest in a paved bike trail in Houston, this route might be the winner. Just west of downtown Houston, this mixed-use trail includes hilly terrain and a lot of flora along the way. There are separate bike and walking trails here, so you can usually ride with limited stops and slowing.
- Memorial Park Loop
Distance: 10+ miles
You can pick your poison at this community park just southwest of Lake Houston. From the easy paved loop in the picnic area to the more challenging 7-mile Ho Chi Minh Trail, there is a place for you to get your pedal on at your own speed. After you dismount, consider a visit to the Arboretum.
- Brays Bayou Greenway Trail
Distance: 35 miles
This is not only one of the best bike trails Houston, but the longest greenway in the city. You’ll pass Gragg Park, The Orange Show, and the Third Ward. As the trail continues to expand westward, you’ll soon be able to reach as far as Asiatown. The Brays Bayou Greenway Trail end points are Hockley St. and Medina St. and Braeburn Glen Blvd.
- Heights Hike and Bike Trail
Distance: 4.7 miles
Connecting Houston Heights to UH Downtown, this relatively short path is on the spot of a former railway line. The multi-use trail also connects to the White Oak Bayou Greenway and the Buffalo Bayou Hike and Bike Trail. Hundreds of people use this trail every day, so it can get a bit crowded. But if you’re looking for a new paved trail in the heart of the city, it doesn’t get much better.
