Walker or Cane Users: The Top EBike & ETrike for Seniors With Limited Mobility

Right here, I've got our Simple Glide 750-watt fat tire e-trike, and right here, I've got our AnyTerrain four-wheel recumbent e-bike. We have a lot of customers who come in for a multitude of reasons—sometimes it's a stroke or a TIA, or maybe there are just mobility issues, a hip replacement, or a knee replacement. Or various other things, like Parkinson's, where you're using a walker or a cane to walk, but you still want to be able to get out and get some exercise. It's great to keep your body moving! A lot of products out there aren't conducive or easy to get on and off, and they just don't feel right. In my experience, when customers come in walking with either a walker or a cane, the two products they gravitate to the most are the AnyTerrain four-wheel recumbent and the Simple Glide 750-watt fat tire. Now, let me walk you through each of these and explain why.

The Simple Glide fat tire is a trike. It features 4-inch wide tires—20-inch diameter in the rear and 16-inch in the front. It has a 750-watt rear hub motor with a 15 amp-hour battery. You can get a range of up to 50 miles, reaching top speeds of 19 mph with just the throttle and about 22 mph in pedal assist. The seat can slide forward and backward so you can find the right position for you. You actually have a hitch back here where you can attach a cargo basket, so if you want to bring your walker with you, you can store it back there on your ride, or you can strap your cane to the back with bungee cords. This also features a footrest if you want to rest your feet during your ride, or you can leave your feet on the pedals. It uses a twist throttle, and it has mechanical disc brakes as well.

A couple of things people really like about this model: Number one, the armrests flip up and down, making entry easy. Of course, you have this very large seat with a high backrest to support your back while riding. The other thing people love is that the seat is at about chair height. On many recumbents, the seats are substantially lower to the ground. Getting onto them might be easy, but getting off can be difficult, or even getting on is tough if you have to lower yourself way down. Chair height is great because you can just walk right over, sit down, and slide your body on. The on-and-off access is really easy. It also features a forward-pedaling design, which is extremely comfortable. With a recumbent style, you're pedaling out in front of your body, which, coupled with the seat, makes for an incredibly comfortable ride. The 4-inch wide tires make it very stable and safe, and when you put the armrests down, you feel nice and secure in the seat. If you have limited mobility or difficulty bending, the seat being at or slightly higher than chair height makes it easy to get on and off without bending your legs too far.

As we make our way over to the four-wheel recumbent, this seat is just a touch lower—more like true chair height—so again, you can sit right down. The beauty of these armrests is that you can use them to push up. On this one, you have even more cargo space in the back where you could fit your walker or cane, plus front cargo space. The seat can slide forward and back, as well as tilt and recline to find the perfect fit. It can also swivel! You can turn the seat to get on directly from the side. So, if you can't easily cram your body in, you can turn the seat to assist with getting on and off. You do have to lift your leg over, but the swivel seat aids greatly. The armrests make you feel nice and secure, lift out of the way, and help you push down to stand up.

Again, it's incredibly comfortable. The seat features a headrest for a nice riding position, and the pedals are positioned out in front of your body, giving your legs a stretched-out feel. If you have limited mobility in your leg or find it hard to bend your knee due to a knee replacement or arthritis, you can adjust the position so your leg is as extended as needed. It also features a seatbelt if you want to feel extra secure. This model has tilting front steering, making it an incredibly balanced and easy-to-steer ride. When one wheel goes up, the other goes down, keeping your front wheels grounded for added safety, balance, and stability. This model has a 750-watt motor and a larger 20 amp-hour battery. The range is similar to the Simple Glide because driving four tires requires a bigger battery to achieve equivalent range. Its top speed is 20 mph using just the throttle and about 22 mph in pedal assist. If you use a walker or a cane, these are great options to keep your legs moving and stay active. Many people don't want to transition to a mobility scooter and give up exercising.

On both of these models, you can use electric pedal assist or the throttle. If you don't have a lot of muscle strength but still want to move your legs, this is perfect. You can select assistance levels one through five—level five gives you the most help, and level one gives the least. Do what you can, and let the bike handle the rest! It can help you get to places on a bike that you might not have been able to reach for a while.
