The best electric tricycle for someone with spinal stenosis. Hey everyone, I'm Dustin. I have nearly 20 years of experience in the bike and e-bike industry. Today, I'm going to show you the best electric tricycle for someone with spinal stenosis. All right, I've got three e-trikes here that are great for someone with spinal stenosis. Our Easy Transit and our Simple Glide fat tire and regular tire. I just finished up a test ride with someone, a 65-year-old woman who has spinal stenosis, and she test rode all three of these trikes. Ultimately, she chose the Easy Transit, she liked how this was more of an upright riding position, like a traditional bike. The Simple Glides are more recumbent, but she really did like the comfort of these two, and again, ultimately chose this one. Now, when I watched her taking the test ride, there were a few things that were important to her as someone with spinal stenosis.
Is the step-over height of the frame? So she needed something with a very low step-over height to make it easy to get on and off, and with our Simple Glide, if you can tell, even the difference between the regular width tire and the fat tire, the fat tire is about an inch and a half higher. That little bit of difference on this frame made it just a little bit more difficult for her to swing the leg over here. So that's something to consider, if you have that spinal stenosis and maybe your mobility's been limited or you have pain from lifting or moving your leg a certain way, something to consider when you're shopping for your e-trike. Now, with the EZ Transit, you have a very low step over. It was easy for her to get on and off. She also liked the position of the handlebars to keep her body upright. Now, like I said, she liked the riding position of these, but there was something about the recumbent setup that, in her mind, made her feel like she was being lazy in a way. Now, that's not true at all. That was just her take and what she preferred. It's just a different type of riding position where you are seated more comfortably. You do have the seat with the backrest. It's not going to mean you're going to get any more or any less exercise, whether you're upright or in a recumbent position.
If you go to the gym and you ride a recumbent bike versus an upright bike, you're still gonna work your legs out equally. But again, those recumbents tend to be a little more comfortable. Now, the 750 watt, the fat tire version is a 750 watt, so a little more powerful. The regular version here is a 500-watt, and the EZ Transit is a 750-watt as well. She enjoyed all of the power of all of them. They seem to suit her just fine, she did like having the extra basket in the back here as well. So, again, if you do have spinal stenosis, I think the mounting and dismounting is one of the most important things to consider. I will say that on the Simple Glides, you can lift the armrests, and you can sit easily and swing your body over. It makes sitting very easy. Now, on this one, the Easy Transit, because you have to have the seat higher, to get proper leg extension, it does require you to get up a little bit more, and then get onto the seat.
So really think about what your body is capable of, but either way, it's great to get out there, keep your body moving. Her doctor had told her that if she can stay mobile, do physical therapy, and get out and ride a bike, it's gonna help minimize the symptoms of the spinal stenosis by staying active and staying mobile. Now, it's not going to cure it, but it will help, and e-trikes are a great way. You can also use the assistance levels, right? So all these have five levels of assistance. So, as you're building your leg strength, you can use a higher level of assistance to help the pedals get going, or you can utilize the throttle, which all of these have, to help get the trike moving and then pedal as you see fit. So the benefit is that you don't have to pedal, or you can pedal a little bit, or you can pedal fully, but get a lot of assistance from the motor as you need it or don't need it. So over time, as you build your leg strength, you can either use less of the assistance, or if you have hills to take on, you can use more of the assistance. So again, it's a great way for someone with spinal stenosis to still get exercise and utilize the assistance to accommodate your body however you need, right? So, again, if you need a lot of assistance, use level five.
When you have these in max power, you're going to be able to go up to 16 miles an hour. Most people, when they put it in the highest level of assistance, are blown away by how much power these e-trikes have. So it can expand your world, and not only that, if you don't want a pedal, now this becomes your personal mobility device to run errands, go out on the town, you name it. You don't have to have a mobility scooter anymore. You can have an electric trike that can replace it. These were her top three choices. She ultimately went with the Easy Transit, but loved the Simple Glides as well. But I think from a budget standpoint, she wanted to stick with something at a little bit more of a price point. Simple Glides are a little more expensive because of the setups, the seats, things like that. Now, if you want to check out all three of them, they're linked in the description below.
