Single Speed vs Seven Speed Adult Tricycle - What are The Differences?!?!

A one-speed tricycle versus a seven-speed tricycle. What's the difference?

Hey everyone, I'm Dustin. I have nearly 20 years of experience in the bike and e-bike industry. And today I'm going to explain to you the difference between a single-speed tricycle and a seven-speed tricycle. All right, right here, I've got the sixthreezerro EvryJourney Tricycle, 250-watt motor on the front there, and our EZ Transit foldable e-trike here as well. Now, tricycles come in different speed options. Most commonly, there are a lot of single speeds. There are also seven-speed tricycles. Now, both of these happen to be electric. But what we're going to talk about is going to apply to both standard conventional trikes and electric trikes.

Now, when you talk about a single-speed tricycle, it's a great option if you plan to just casually cruise around the neighborhood and you only need one gear and you're mostly going to do flat ground riding. Now, on an electric tricycle, having one speed, that's all well and good as well. Just keep in mind if you've got five levels of pedal assist, having that one gear is going to make it difficult to match your pedal assist in any instance. What I mean by this is like, you can gear that one gear to really match one level of the pedal assist perfectly. And a lot of times, brands will gear that one speed to the highest level of pedal assist to ensure that people can reach top speeds. Now with that said, if you're in the lower level of pedal assist that's that first gear may be difficult to pedal or too difficult to pedal. The same is true for a non-electric tricycle. If you just have one gear and you're starting to ride, that one gear is going to have to be geared to do it all for you. Flat ground, high speeds, the whole nine yards. So it may be difficult for you to start pedaling on your tricycle if you only have one speed. Then once you reach a sort of cruising speed, you'll find your rhythm with that one speed. That's where multi-speed or seven-speed tricycles come in. You've got that first speed where it's going to be easy to pedal and you won't feel that resistance.

Then you'll have your higher level, like level seven in a seven-speed be more difficult to pedal and that's when you can start to reach top speeds. So the benefit of either an electric or non-electric to have those gears, in particular, is when you start out riding, And also, if you don't plan to use the pedal assist or you have a non-electric, having that one, two, three gear is going to be nice as you begin to pedal and as you make as you come up to speed, then you can shift to the higher gear right from second to third to fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, so on and so forth. Now, it depends on the type of riding you're doing as well. If you have a conventional tricycle and you're going to take on any type of hill at all, even minor hills on a tricycle with only one gear, are going to feel fairly difficult. And I say this because you've only got one speed and it's only determining or it's only allowing you one gear, right? So you're taking on a hill, you can't shift, you can't make it easier to pedal at all. In a seven-speed, you can shift, you can find that first gear, make it easier to pedal, and allow you to get up the hill with simplicity. So You have to think about the type of riding that you're going to do on your tricycle, and what your needs are.

You know, some people may want the simplicity of a single speed. That's perfect, right? Some people may not want the gears because it's going to help you get around a little bit better, take on hills, and just give you more possibilities by having those different gears. So there is a big difference between a single-speed tricycle and a seven-speed tricycle.
