This is the section I most want new four-wheel riders to read, because it's where the handling is genuinely different from a bike or even a trike. The golden rule is simple: keep all four wheels on flat ground when you're entering or exiting a raised surface. When you're rolling onto or off of an elevated curb, you want every wheel to make the transition on level ground, not with one axle up on the curb and the other down in the gutter.
Here's why. On an elevated curb, the tilting front wheels actually handle the drop okay, because the steering mechanism lets them articulate. The problem is the rear. If you let a rear wheel come off an elevated edge while the other is still up, you get thrown off balance in a hurry, and you'll find yourself leaning hard to one side to compensate. That's a recipe for trouble. The front end's tilt keeps things fairly composed, but if you're not ready for that rear-wheel drop, it can pitch you back one way or the other.
Never come off a curb on an angle
The single biggest mistake you can make is taking an elevated curb at an angle. On a regular two-wheel bike, dropping off a curb diagonally isn't a huge deal. On a four-wheel machine — and on trikes in general — it's a hard no. When you approach at an angle, the first wheel drops, the frame starts to tip toward that low corner, and you begin going over. I felt it start to happen the moment one wheel led the others down. So if you ever have to come off a curb without a ramp, the only safe way is to hit it dead straight and completely square to the edge. Straight on, all wheels crossing the same line, is what keeps you balanced.
Curved curbs are their own trap. Even when I tried to exit straight, a section of curb that had a slight curve to it forced one wheel down before the others — and that's exactly what creates the instability. So look for the flattest, straightest part of any edge you have to cross, and cross it there. The same logic applies to sloped bike-lane edges: a lot of bike lanes taper down toward the curb, and you want to be sure you don't get pulled or sucked into that slope. Keep your line, keep your wheels level, and you'll be fine.
Riding in real traffic adds one more habit to build. Because the ANYterrain is wider than a bike and tracks those rear wheels behind you, give yourself room and steer to the outside when you're passing something big like a parked truck or a garbage truck pulled up at the curb. It's the same width-awareness you'd use in any wider vehicle, and after a few blocks it stops being something you think about.
A straight word on sidewalks
People always ask whether they can ride something like this on the sidewalk, and the honest answer is that it depends entirely on where you live. In some places sidewalk riding is allowed; in many it isn't; and the rules covering personal mobility devices and accessibility accommodations vary from state to state and even city to city. I'm not going to tell you what's legal in your area, because I genuinely don't know your local ordinances — and neither does anyone selling you a bike. Before you ride anywhere other than the road or a designated path, check your local jurisdiction and follow whatever rules apply where you are. When in doubt, treat it like any other vehicle and stay where vehicles belong.

Let's start with the assist. On the lowest setting, level one, you can still get full power out of the thumb throttle — so throttle-only riding is always available when you just want to cruise without pedaling. But if you want the highest level of motor assistance while you pedal, you bump it up to level five. I spent the day moving between them depending on the situation: lower assist for casual, flat cruising, higher assist when I needed the motor to do more of the work.
Climbing hills the right way
Hills are where technique earns its keep. To climb a grade on the ANYterrain, you want to do two things at once: drop into your lower gears and put the pedal assist up into its highest level. Here's an honest caveat — depending on how much the rider weighs, getting up a real hill on throttle alone may not happen. The throttle is great, but on a steeper climb you'll likely need to add pedal assist, and once you do, the bike gets you up the hill without much drama. I climbed in gear three and it was manageable; when I wanted to make it even easier on my legs, I dropped all the way down to gear one and spun up comfortably.
The trickier scenario is stopping partway up a hill — say, catching a red light on an incline. I'll be straight with you: stopping on an incline is never fun on any heavier bike, and it's less than ideal here too. The mistake I made once was not preparing for the stop, so I was sitting in my highest gear when the light caught me. The fix is to downshift into a lower gear before you come to a stop, so you're already geared to pull away when the light turns. If you do get caught in a high gear, start shifting down immediately and ease the throttle and pedals together to get rolling again. The motor has the torque to pull away from a grade once you're in the right gear — the whole trick is being in that lower gear before you need it, not scrambling for it while you're stopped. Plan your stops on hills and you'll never fight it.
Reverse is the sleeper feature
Now for the feature that gets the biggest reaction: reverse. There's a switch — a little red toggle — that flips the machine into reverse. Set it to R, give it throttle, and pedal along as it backs up. On a 120-pound quadricycle, that's a genuinely useful trick. Getting out of a tight parking spot, for example, you've got two options: hop off and pull it backward by hand, or stay in the saddle, flip it into reverse, and simply back yourself out. I know which one my back prefers. Reverse also shines in spots you'd never expect — backing away from a curb you pulled up to nose-first, repositioning in a garage, or squaring yourself up to take a curb dead straight like we talked about earlier. It turns a two-person shuffle into a one-thumb operation. There's also a parking brake you can set when you're stopped and want to relax at a light without holding the levers. None of this is flashy, but it's the kind of everyday practicality that makes the ANYterrain quad easy to live with.
Turning a four-wheeler takes a slightly different brain than turning a bike, and it's worth getting used to. Because you've got two wheels in the back set wide apart, cornering is a lot like turning a trike — or, if you've ever driven a U-Haul, you already know the feeling. On a normal bike you're used to cutting a corner tight to your front wheel. You cannot do that here. You have to be mindful of where those rear wheels track and steer wider through the corner so the back end clears whatever you're turning around.
Something else to unlearn: leaning does not steer this machine. On a two-wheeler you can guide the bike with body English alone. On the ANYterrain you steer with the bars, and the wheels stay relatively straight until you actually turn them. That said, I do naturally lean to shift my body weight through a turn to help keep everything balanced. Sometimes it's necessary, sometimes it isn't — it depends on how sharp the turn is and how fast I'm carrying into it. It becomes second nature within a few minutes.
Off-road and rough ground
This is where the fat tires and four-wheel layout really pay off. I took it onto hard-packed sand, and it rode smooth and stayed planted. On an angled patch of ground where a lot of machines would feel dicey, I still had great traction and the four wheels stayed well planted — I leaned a bit to be safe, but I'd have had to really try to tip it over. Honestly, on angles it feels more stable than a trike, and I credit the tilting front end and those four-inch-wide tires for that. One realistic limit: soft, loose sand is still soft sand. You need to get down to where it's hard-packed to ride comfortably, and that's true of most e-bikes and trikes, not a knock on this one specifically. The four-wheel stance is a big part of why it feels so sure-footed: on a trike, an off-camber patch of ground tries to tip you toward the downhill wheel, but here the tilting front and that fourth wheel give you an extra point of support, so the machine shrugs off angles that would make a three-wheeler nervous. I sat parked on a noticeable slope and genuinely had to work to make it feel tippy at all. Over bumps, the four wide tires absorb the shock so well that rough surfaces barely register.
The grocery run
Let's talk about what I think will sell a lot of these: cargo. The large basket between the rear wheels swallows a real haul. I loaded it up on an ordinary grocery run — an eighteen-pack of soda, cartons of egg whites, lemonade, the usual — and still had room to spare, with the optional front basket available on top of that. Between the two baskets, you could realistically stack several large multi-packs and still have space. When I was done, I locked it up by running the lock through the frame and a wheel, which is quick and easy. It changes how you use the bike, too.
