Perfect Bicycle for Autistic Children & Adults: A Great Way to Bring an Autistic Person on a Bike

Mother: We have two kids with disabilities. Our older son is highly functional autistic and he's extremely bright but has trouble with some motor skills. Riding a traditional two-wheel bike was a little bit difficult for him. As far as trying to maintain balance and the like. So the e-bike comes in handy for our older son because he's transitioning to driving. And so we want to make sure that he's able to handle that in preparation for that transition. My younger son is multiple disabled but loves to be outside. So the e-bike is helpful because it keeps us safe and allows us to get outside. I get some exercise because when you have children with special needs, it's really hard sometimes to get out of the house and you don't always want to get in your car.

Mother: So the e-bike is great because I can pack up picnics and take the kids out. I can even take my two kids out together. I also have my trek bike, which is a traditional two-wheel bike and once my older son is comfortable and safe riding this bike in his transition to driving, I can also ride my bike while he drives this bike with his younger son. So it's an activity we can all do together as a family. I'm excited about the bike because it allows us just to be more active as a family, and it allows him to participate. Driving is not in his future, but riding is, and this is something that we'll have to continue for a long, long time. Do you want to get down? He's able to get easily on and off the bike. Can you get down?

Son: I'll ride the bike.

Mother: You want to ride the bike.

Son: Pedal, pedal, pedal!

Mother: Say stop!

Son: Stop! Stop. Stop.

Mother: Say, we are stopped.

Son: Good.

Mother: Say, we love our e-bikes. Can you say you love your e-bike? Right here. Come here. Get down. You can do it. Good. Okay. Now, do you want him to walk up to the bike this way?

Son: We love the bike.

Mother: I know you want to ride the bike. Okay, can you go get on the bike? Let's go. Let's go for a ride. Go get on the bike. Side to side. Okay, get on there. Get on there. Get on there. Do you want me to hold it? Okay.

Son: Go.

Mother: Here we go.

Son: Go.

Mother: What do you need? You need to put on your…

Son: Seat belt.

Mother: Yes. Say, buckle up. Buckle up. It's time for safety.

Son: Safety.

Mother: Yeah. Say, I love my e-bike.

Son: I love my e-bike.
