A Four-Wheel Platform, Now Lying Back

I'm Dustin, and I've spent about 20 years in the bike and e-bike world. Every so often we build something that doesn't slot neatly next to anything else we make, and this is one of those. Say hello to the ANYterrain Recumbent 4-Wheel eBike. It's unlike anything we've done before, and I've been itching to walk people through it.

If you've followed us for a while, you probably know our original ANYterrain four-wheeler. That one put you in a more upright riding position, sitting tall over the frame the way you would on a traditional bike or trike. Plenty of riders loved it. But we kept hearing from people who wanted to sink even lower, stretch their legs out in front of them, and take balance almost entirely out of the equation. So we built this recumbent version: we dropped the seat down close to the ground, moved the pedals forward, and reworked the whole riding position around comfort and stability.

The result sits in a category we don't have many of. You can see the rest of them on our four-wheel e-bikes page. Four wheels already give you a wider footprint and far less chance of tipping than two or three. Lay the rider back into a recumbent seat on top of that, and you get something that feels less like balancing a bike and more like settling into a chair that happens to move. That combination is the whole point.

Here's the thinking behind pairing a recumbent seat with four wheels. On most bikes, your body sits high and your weight rides up over the frame, so every bit of balancing you do happens well above the ground. Drop the seat and recline the rider, and the whole center of gravity comes down with you. Now put that low, laid-back rider on four wide tires instead of two skinny ones, and the machine simply doesn't want to lean or tip. You feel it the instant you sit down, before you've even started pedaling.

One benefit that's easy to overlook until you experience it: this thing is stable when you're barely moving, and even when you're stopped. On a two-wheeler, the slowest speeds and the moment you put a foot down are where balance gets fussy. Here, you can roll to a crawl, sit at a light, or stop dead on a slight incline and just stay put, upright and settled, without thinking about it. For a lot of people that single quality, not having to manage balance at low speed, is the reason they can ride at all.

Who this ride is really for

I'll be honest about where this shines. If you've ever felt nervous on two wheels, or you've tried a standard three-wheel trike and still didn't feel planted, this is worth a look. A lot of the riders drawn to it deal with balance concerns, or they're just done white-knuckling every slow turn and every stop. Some are coming back to riding after years away. If that's you, spend a minute with our recumbent electric trikes too, because the seating philosophy carries over. The difference here is that fourth wheel and everything it does for stability.

The name isn't just branding, either. This platform is built to go where you point it: smooth neighborhood streets, packed dirt, gravel paths, the kind of mixed ground where a skinny-tired bike gets nervous. Four fat tires spread across a wide stance means the surface underneath you matters a lot less than it would on almost anything else we make. So while plenty of riders will buy this for the confidence on pavement, you're not boxed into pavement.

The flip side, and I'd rather say it plainly: this is a big, deliberate machine built for confidence and comfort, not for darting around or squeezing into a small trunk. If you want the most stable thing we've ever put out and you're not sold on a conventional e-bike, keep reading, because I think this changes the conversation. The Captain's Chair Seat

A real seat, not a saddle

Let's start with the feature people react to first: this captain's chair style seat. It's a proper seat with a back and a headrest, and almost everything about it moves to fit you.

The headrest raises and lowers, and there's real travel there. The armrests fold up and down, so you can drop them out of the way to get on, then bring them back for a relaxed cruise, or leave them up entirely if that's more comfortable for you. Personally I like riding with them up part of the time. Point is, they're your call, ride to ride.

Recline and dial it in

The seat back reclines, and this is where you find your spot. You can sit fairly upright, lean way back, or land somewhere in between, and then leave it there. I keep a tape measure on me when I'm setting these up because small changes matter. A couple inches of recline or seat position completely changes how the pedaling feels. Take a few minutes the first day and actually fine-tune it. It's worth it.

You can also slide the whole seat forward and backward to set your leg length against the pedals. Because the pedals are way out in front of you on a recumbent, getting that distance right is the difference between a cramped stroke and a smooth, full one. When I got on to ride, I actually had it a touch too close and had to bump it back. Even I need to dial it in, and I set these up all the time.

The forward seat angle, on purpose

You might notice the seat bottom tilts forward just slightly, and that's deliberate. When your legs are out in front of you and you're pushing the pedals, a dead-flat seat bottom would catch the back of your thighs on every stroke. Angling the seat down a hair opens that up, so your thighs clear and the pedal stroke stays natural all the way around. Had we left it flat, it would have been more intrusive to pedal. This way it's really comfortable, and I never feel like I'm sliding forward out of the seat.

Swivel to get on and off

Here's a feature I'm genuinely excited about: the seat swivels. Mounting and dismounting is where a lot of riders struggle, so we let the seat twist to the side. Rotate it toward you, sit down without having to swing a leg over anything, then twist back to center and it locks into place. If you're on a bit of a slope like I was, that swivel makes climbing on far less of a production. When you're done riding, twist it back out and step off the same easy way. I'll admit I forgot to use it once at the end of a ride, out of habit, but once you get used to it, it's the natural way on and off.

The seat belt, if you want it

There's also a seat belt, and it's optional. Plenty of riders won't use it. But we get a lot of people who have balance issues or who are simply scared of falling out of the seat, and for them that belt is peace of mind. Buckle in and you're held in place, settled, free to just ride. Leave it off if you don't need it. Like the rest of this seat, it's there to serve you, not the other way around.

Why the headrest matters more than you'd think

On a short spin around the block, a headrest sounds like a luxury. On a longer ride, it's the thing that keeps your neck and shoulders from doing quiet work the whole time. Lean back, let your head rest, and your upper body actually relaxes instead of holding itself up. Combine that with the recline and the armrests, and you end up in a position you could stay in comfortably far longer than you'd last perched on a traditional saddle. That's the difference between a bike you ride when you have to and one you ride because you want to.

None of these adjustments require tools or a mechanic, either. The headrest, the armrests, the recline, the fore-and-aft seat slide: you set them by hand, in the moment, right there on the bike. That means two people in the same household can share this and each have their own comfortable setup within a minute of sitting down. Swap riders, make a few quick changes, and you're both dialed in.

All of this adjustability is really about fit, and fit is the thing we care about most. The Leaning Front End, Wheels, and Cockpit

A front end that leans into turns

Now let's work up to the front of the bike, because the steering is one of my favorite parts. Up front we've got a system where, when one wheel goes up, the other goes down. Lift one side and you can watch the other drop to match. What that means on the road is that when you take a turn, the front end leans with you and both front wheels stay planted and balanced through the corner. It's incredibly composed. You point it into a turn and it just follows, no drama.

This leaning front-end idea isn't brand new for us. It's the same thinking behind our two-front-wheel tadpole e-trikes, where the pair of wheels out front tilt together to keep you level. Here we've carried that engineering onto a four-wheel platform, so you get the natural, leaning feel of that front end plus the extra stability of a wheel at each corner.

Why the leaning geometry matters

Let me explain why leaning wheels are such a big deal on a stable platform. A rigid four-wheeler can feel awkward in corners, because the outside wheels want to lift and the whole thing resists turning. By letting the front wheels tilt together, this front end leans into the corner the way your body naturally wants to, so the turn feels smooth and connected instead of stiff. You get the security of four wheels without the clunky, tippy feeling that can come with a fixed wide stance. That's the balance we were chasing, literally and figuratively.

Wheels sized for stability

The wheels are deliberately mismatched: 16 inches up front and 20 inches in the rear. That forward-and-down stance puts a little more downward load on the front wheels, the ones doing the steering and leaning, which adds to how stable it feels when you turn. All four tires are four inches wide, so you've got a lot of rubber on the ground at every corner. That width is what lets this stay planted on pavement and still float over dirt, gravel, and packed sand. If wide, cushiony tires are what you're after, you'll see the same idea across our fat-tire e-bikes.

An adjustable cockpit

The handlebars sit up on an adjustable stem, and it's easy to work with. There's a lever you unlock to tilt the stem toward you or away, then lock it back down. On top of that, you can angle the handlebars themselves, and adjust them up and down. Between the stem tilt and the bar angle, you can get the reach and hand position genuinely right for your body instead of settling for close enough. When I hopped on, and I'm five-foot-ten, the bars were set a little low for me, so I loosened the stem, tilted it up, angled the grips forward a touch, and I was set in a few seconds.

The grips are mini-ape style, which brings your hands up into a relaxed, natural spot and adds to the whole comfortable, laid-back feel. Paired with the recumbent seat, you end up with your hands and your body in easy positions at the same time, which is not something you can say about most bikes.

Because the stem and bars adjust by hand, the cockpit sizes to you the same way the seat does. A shorter rider can bring the bars up and back; a taller rider can push everything out and open it up. That's a big part of how one machine comfortably fits such a wide range of people, which I'll put real numbers to later on.

Up front: basket and light

There's a front basket up there for whatever you want to bring along, and a front headlight built in so you're seen and you can see. I'll cover all the cargo and lighting together a bit later, but I mention the front basket here because it lives right in the cockpit area, easy to reach and load.

If I had to point at one feature that convinces nervous riders, it's this front end. You can feel it holding both wheels to the ground through a turn, and you can feel it refusing to get twitchy. For someone who's been shopping stable rides and hasn't found one that felt right, this is the part I'd want them to experience first. It's the difference between a machine you hope stays under you and one you trust to.

All of your controls live right here on the bars too: the shifter, the throttle, the horn, the turn signals, the drive-and-reverse switch, and the display. Rather than rattle through them here, let me take you into the power and the electronics next, because that's where this ride really comes together.

Power, Brakes, and Controls

The motor and battery

At the heart of this is a 750-watt rear-mounted motor. It sits down low between the rear wheels, and it's got real pulling power, enough to move the machine, the cargo, and you up a grade without drama. Feeding it is a 20-amp-hour battery tucked under the seat. It's removable: unlock it, slide it out, and you can charge it either on the bike or off it, whichever fits your setup. Being able to pull the battery and bring it inside to charge is a small thing that makes ownership a lot easier, especially if the bike lives in a garage or shed.

A quick word on how the rear motor feels. With the drive at the back wheels, the power comes from behind and pushes you along, which suits this low, laid-back riding position. You settle into the seat and the bike surges forward underneath you. It's a smooth, planted kind of power delivery rather than anything jumpy.

Seven gears and pedal assist

You pedal through a standard seven-speed drivetrain, the same kind of gears you'd find on a regular bicycle. Shift down to spin easily up a hill, shift up to stretch your legs on the flats and carry more speed. Layered on top of the gears are five levels of pedal assist. Assist level sets how much the motor helps each time you pedal: dial it up when you want a strong push, back it off when you'd rather do more of the work yourself. Between seven mechanical gears and five assist levels, you've got a lot of ways to tune effort to the moment.

On the battery, plan your charging around how you ride. If you're doing errands and neighborhood loops, topping off between rides keeps you ready to go, and because the pack slides out, you can charge it wherever's convenient rather than parking the whole bike next to an outlet. How far a charge takes you will depend on the usual things, how much you lean on the assist, how hilly your routes are, how much you're carrying, and rider weight, so I'd rather point you to the product page for a real range figure than hand you a number that won't match your riding.

The throttle and reverse

There's also a thumb throttle. Press it and the bike moves without any pedaling at all, handy when you're pulling away from a stop, creeping through a parking lot, or you just don't feel like pedaling for a stretch. On the throttle it'll take you up to about 20 miles per hour. And here's a feature you don't see every day: reverse. Flip the switch from drive to reverse and the bike backs itself up. On a machine this long, being able to reverse under power instead of shuffling it around with your feet is genuinely useful. You'll appreciate it the first time you need to back out of a tight spot. If throttle control is a must-have for you, we build it into plenty of rides across our throttle-equipped electric trikes.

Four hydraulic disc brakes

Stopping is handled by hydraulic disc brakes, four of them, one at each wheel. That's a lot of braking power for a lot of confidence, especially coming downhill or slowing a loaded machine. Hydraulic discs give you strong, controlled stops without needing a death grip on the levers. There's also a set of parking brakes, so you can lock it in place when you're parked on a slope or loading cargo. Braking is one of those things you don't think about until you need it, and here you've got plenty in reserve. It's the same standard of stopping we put across our disc-brake electric trikes.

Horn, signals, lights, and display

Up on the bars you've got a horn, turn-signal blinkers, up-and-down buttons, and a display that keeps you posted on what the bike's doing. The drive-and-reverse switch is right there too. Out back, there's a brake light integrated into the braking system, so when you slow down, your light comes on and the folks behind you know it. Add the front headlight and the turn signals and you've got a machine that communicates clearly with the traffic around you, which matters a lot on something this size.

What I like about the whole control layout is that nothing's hidden or fiddly. Thumb throttle, gear shifter, assist buttons, horn, signals, reverse: they're all right under your hands where you'd expect them, so you're not hunting for anything mid-ride. On a machine designed to take the stress out of riding, the controls being this straightforward is the whole idea.

Staying street legal

We built this to stay within the legal limits, and that mattered to us. Yes, it has four wheels, but as far as we know, it's still classified as an e-bike, and the electronics fit inside the legal e-bike limits: 750 watts, a top speed of 20 miles per hour on the throttle, and pedal assist capped at 28. In practice, in pedal assist you're realistically going to feel like you're cruising around 20 to 21 miles per hour under normal riding. So if you want the stability and comfort of four wheels but you still want something that reads as a street-legal e-bike, this fits the bill.

Fit, Size, and Cargo

How low, and who it fits

The seat sits about 25 inches off the ground, which is low, and that's the point. A low seat means getting on and off is simple, no high step-over, no climbing up into position, and combined with the swivel seat I talked about earlier, mounting and dismounting is about as easy as we could make it. You can also see how far forward the pedals sit, which is what opens up the leg room.

On sizing, this accommodates riders from about four-foot-ten all the way up to six-foot-four comfortably. That's a wide range for one machine, and it comes down to all that adjustment: the sliding seat, the recline, the adjustable stem and bars. To show it wasn't just talk, I put a six-foot-four rider named Jeff in the seat, and he fit comfortably with room to settle in. Between the shortest and tallest riders it'll fit, most households have everyone covered by one bike.

That low, easy entry deserves a little more attention, because for a lot of riders it's the deciding factor. If your knees or hips make swinging a leg over a bike a problem, or if lowering yourself onto a tall saddle feels precarious, a 25-inch seat you can swivel toward you changes the whole equation. You sit down onto it almost like sitting into a chair, then bring the seat back to center. Getting off is the same in reverse. It sounds minor written down, but it's the kind of thing that decides whether someone rides at all.

Let's talk about the length

I won't dance around it: this is a long machine. Front to back, it's about 90 and a half inches. That's longer than most of our e-trikes, so if you need to transport it or store it in a tight space, that's something to plan for up front. I'd rather you know that going in than be surprised in your garage.

Here's the context, though. If you're specifically shopping true, lay-down recumbents, a lot of them run about this same length. It's just what happens when you stretch the rider out and put the pedals way forward. So this isn't unusually long for what it is; it's long compared to an upright trike, and right in line with other real recumbents. Weight-wise, the machine comes in around 130 pounds, which is substantial. That mass is part of what makes it feel so planted, but it's another reason to think through how you'll move and store it.

Cargo, front and back

You've got a basket up front and a basket in the rear, so there's real room to haul. Run your errands, carry your groceries, bring your stuff along, or put your dog in the back. The rear basket especially gives you a good chunk of space for a bag or whatever you're bringing. Between the two baskets and the stability of the four-wheel platform, you can load it up without the bike getting tippy or squirrely the way a two-wheeler would with a heavy load. Fenders and lights

It comes with front and rear fenders to keep road spray and debris off you and the bike, a front headlight, and that integrated rear brake light I mentioned. Add the turn signals and the display, and the whole package is set up for real-world riding: errands after dark, a little wet pavement, actual roads with actual traffic. These aren't afterthoughts; they're the difference between a bike that looks good in a showroom and one that works for the way you'll really use it.

Think about the real trips this is built for. A loop around the neighborhood to loosen up. A run to the store where you actually need to carry what you buy home. A ride down to the water or through the park where the whole point is to relax and take it in. Because you're not managing balance and you're sitting in a genuinely comfortable position, those trips stop feeling like exercise you have to psych yourself up for and start feeling like something you'd choose to do. That shift, from chore to pleasure, is what the fit, the size, and the cargo space are all in service of.

So plan for the size, love the fit. Measure your garage or your vehicle before it arrives so the length isn't a surprise, and know that once it's there, just about anyone in the house from well under five feet to well over six can get comfortable on it in a minute. Very few rides stretch that wide, and the ones that do usually make you give something up to get there. This one doesn't ask you to.

On the Road, and What Comes With It

How it actually rides

Numbers and features are one thing; let me tell you what it's like to ride. The first thing that hits you is the pedal position: it's insanely comfortable. Because of that slight forward seat angle, the seat isn't catching the back of my legs until I've already finished the full pedal stroke, so every rotation feels clean and natural. I could sit in that position a long time.

The next thing is the stability, and I don't say this lightly: this is probably the most stable trike or quad I've ridden. Through turns you can feel the front wheels working. The way they lean and stay planted makes cornering feel connected and sure. Like I said earlier, it's genuinely more like driving a car than riding a bike. You turn the bars and the whole machine settles into the corner instead of getting nervous. Even the turning radius is better than you'd expect for something this long.

Hills and speed

I took it onto a couple of real hills to see how it handles a grade. I'm 230 pounds, and with the machine adding around 130 more, that's a lot of weight to haul uphill, so I downshifted through the gears and let the pedal assist do its share. Even loaded like that, I wasn't having to kill myself to climb; the assist takes the sting out of it. A lighter rider will scale the same hill even more easily. Climbing in pedal assist five, I was moving along in the mid-teens up the steeper stuff, which is plenty to keep momentum.

Then, coming back onto flatter ground, I opened it up all the way in top assist just to see what it had, and on that run, pedaling hard with some momentum behind me, I touched 26 miles per hour. That's an all-out burst with everything working together, not the number you'll live at. Day to day, figure on cruising around 20 to 21 in pedal assist and up to 20 on the throttle, exactly like I covered with the street-legal limits. But it was a lot of fun to find out the ceiling has a little headroom in it.

Bumps, curbs, and rough patches

Here's a benefit of that leaning front end I didn't fully appreciate the first time either. When you go over a bump or roll up a curb, the front wheels move independently and adjust to the obstacle, so the front end acts like a shock absorber. The wheels take the hit and the vibration that reaches you gets softened. Rolling over uneven ground and up curbs, it stays impressively smooth, the kind of thing you notice most when you realize you didn't get jostled the way you would on a stiffer bike.

Put it all together, the comfort, the stability, the way it soaks up bumps, and you get a ride that's just plain relaxing. Settle into the seat, and when you're done, remember to use that swivel to step off easily. It really is comfortable and fun in a way that's hard to explain until you're in the seat.
