How to Ride Your ETrike & EBike in the Rain! Tips for Riding Your Electric Bike Safely in the Rain

How to ride your e-trike in the rain. Hey everyone, it's Dustin. I have nearly 20 years of experience in the bike and e-bike industry, and today I'm gonna show you how to ride your electric trike in the rain. All right, I'm sitting on our EZ Transit folding e-trike. Now, we've got a pretty decent rainfall here today in California, and I wanted to take the opportunity to come out and show how to ride in the rain. All right, so first things are... How to drive and ride your e-trike in the rain, as well as preparation. I just did another video detailing preparations I did to come out in the rain, but I'll walk you through them really quick. Now with all of your electric connections on your e-bike or e-trike, they're not going to be watertight necessarily, especially places around the battery and also up here by your display and these cable connections. So, The display, I put a plastic bag around and wrapped electrical tape around it and the connections that are underneath your cable housing in the front. So, some manufacturers are gonna hide the connections under this cabling. Rain's picking up out here. We're gonna hide them under the cabling, and some are going to expose them so you could actually change the connections. What I've done is take electrical tape and wrap it around the connections just to ensure they're not gonna get wet. In addition to that, if you have a battery that sits facing up to the sky, take some electrical tape and seal off the points, the connection points. Now, I like electrical tape because it's got a lower adhesive, and it's easier to remove. If you want something that's gonna even be tighter or better, you could opt for a stronger adhesive-type sticker, but again, because you're not going to have this tape on there forever, necessarily. You want to take these precautions if you are going to ride out in the rain, if you're going to go out in the rain, or if you think you might get caught in the rain. How to ride or steer your e-trike in the rain?

First and foremost, having fenders on your trike is going to be really great because when you ride through puddles, it's going to prevent that splash-up. Now, in addition to that, a couple of things to make sure you're aware of, and it is pouring on me right now, but it's all good. So if you have a disc brake, as an example, your wheels are going to be wet, and your discs are going to be wet. So you've got to be a little more cautious with the braking. It may be more delayed than usual. So you've got to make sure you brake really far out in advance. The other thing, obviously, is your tires are going to be very slick on the pavement when they're wet like this. So you're already going to be cautious on a trike when taking turns. Slow down even more on your turns if you have a slick tread. Also, if you live or you're riding in a bike lane, especially, the oil from the street is going to disperse into those bike lanes. So those bike lanes, when it gets rainy out, can become a... Holding tank for all of that residual oil and other things that drip onto the street. So you've got to be really, really careful when you're on a slick surface like that. All right, in addition to that if you want to take your time, be cautious. If you can somehow rig up an umbrella or you know, protective screen around you, that's a great idea, but other than that, we can just do what we're gonna do. Like any normal day out here on our e-trike. Now I can hear when I'm braking how the brakes are taking a little more time. Yeah, they're all wet back there and, one thing I just thought about, if you're riding in the rain, eye protection is probably not a bad idea, especially right now in the rain blasting me in the face. So, you know, if you have some clear lenses or if you have a helmet with a clear face on, that's not a bad idea. I mean, it's going to get wet, but it's not going to go straight into your eyes, at least might be a little bit easier to see.

So something to think about again, things that you might want to go out if you live in a humid place, it rains very frequently, or now on not very frequently, or on very short notice, it might just start raining. May want to take some eye protection with you. May want to either wrap your bike in the electrical tape or bring the electrical tape with you just to be prepared and honestly, if it's warm outside and kind of drizzling, it probably would be fun. This is, uh, fun, kind of, but it's a little bit chilly out here in California today. So, wouldn't be my number one preference of riding with the wind and rain on my face.
