How To Ride an E Bike Safely

Electric bikes are taking the cycling world by storm, and it’s not difficult to see why. With a simple flip of a switch, riders can determine how much electrical assistance they want versus how much effort they want to exude. Electric bicycles make it easier for people of all health and fitness levels to enjoy the outdoors and get exercise in a pleasant environment. They can also help riders cut back on driving time and thus reduce wear-and-tear on their vehicles while also saving money on gas. However, the motorized aspect of ebikes does raise some safety concerns. If you’re wondering how to ride an electric bike safely, here are a few tips to follow.

Wear a Helmet

This may seem obvious, but you should never go anywhere on your ebike without a helmet. There are different types of electric bikes for sale that are capable of reaching various speeds, but even at the slowest speed, you could become seriously injured if you wreck on your bike. You also need to protect yourself from distracted drivers who may not notice you until it’s too late. A good helmet is one of the most important investments you can make for your safety while riding.

Install Lights

If you ever take an ebike ride in the early morning or evening hours, you’ll want to be visible to other cyclists and motorists. One of the best ways to achieve greater visibility is to install lights on the front and rear of your bike. You can opt for lights that have steady beams, or choose lights that have flashing lights to gain more attention. There are even options that allow you to cycle between steady and flashing beams as desired.

Ride in the Lane

For maximum electric bike safety, ride in the lane if you have the ability to travel as fast as the posted speed limit. Riding on the shoulder can be more dangerous because it makes you less visible to traffic.

Install Mirrors

Visibility is dangerously limited for cyclists, so installing side mirrors on your electric cruiser bike is a wise choice. That way, you can simply glance in your side mirrors to see exactly what’s going on around you.

Inflate Your Tires Properly

When your tires are properly inflated according to the manufacturer’s instructions, you have better control of your bike. If your tires are underinflated, they are at greater risk of losing grip with the road or becoming punctured. Worn tires are dangerous and can pop at any time. Rather than take the risk of losing control or getting in a wreck, check your tires before each ride to make sure they’re properly inflated and in good condition.

Be Defensive

The most important thing you can do when riding an electric bike safely is be defensive and aware of your surroundings. Adopt the attitude that other motorists are not paying attention to you. When you need to make a turn, always assume other drivers can’t see you and be extremely cautious.

Remember, when it comes to a battle between a motorist and an electric bicycle, the motorist will always win. If you take these precautions, you’ll reduce your risk of injury while riding.
