How to Mount & Dismount an Electric Trike: Use the Brakes When Getting On & Off Your ETrike

Why is holding the brakes on an e-trike so important when you're mounting and dismounting? Hey everyone, I'm Dustin. I have nearly 20 years of experience in the bike and e-bike industry, and today we're going to talk about why holding the brakes on an e-trike is so important when you're mounting or dismounting. All right. Got three of our e-trikes, our 750-watt folding fat tire e-trike, Simple Glide fat tire 750-watt, and EVRYjourney cruiser-style 250-watt e-trike. Now, riding a trike is... Great. It's easy. It's balanced, right? You can sit down, you don't have to balance why you hold the brake. You don't have to balance, you can just sit down, and the bike balances for you. Now, I have seen a lot of people mount and dismount our electric trikes before, and I've seen that when they don't utilize the brake, there's a risk of falling.

Getting unstable, and ultimately falling to the ground. Now, many electric trikes have parking brakes these two of ours do. This one does not currently. So, when you are mounting or dismounting an electric trike, there are two ways to engage the brake here, right? You want to always make sure you have the brake engaged in some way when you're getting on and off. So you can see if I don't have the brake, many people when they go to mount, want to put a little pressure on the handlebars, right? And so you start pushing forward, and now the trike starts rolling and you go to get on, you know, you can fall, bad things can happen, right? So there are two ways to engage the brakes.

One, when you're getting on, just put your hands up here on the brakes, and pull the levers down. At that point, your trike's not going to move, and you can safely get on okay. The other option is you engage the parking brake, so in this case, on these parking brakes, you pull the lever you push in a little button that locks the brakes in. Now the trike won't move at all and from there if you do need to use the handlebars to get on and off you can press down well got to make sure your handlebars are tight but you can press down forward here grab on and now your trike's not going to move and you can use that to steady yourself, or if you don't want to use the handlebars, let's say you want to press down on an armrest. Then in that case, you'll want to engage the parking brake so you can press put your weight down, press here, and lower yourself into the seat the whole time with the parking brakes engaged.

Now your trike won't roll and move on you, so it is very important when mounting and dismounting an e-trike. You don't want it to roll away from you, especially if you have a lot of your body weight down on it and you're trying to use the trike to stabilize you and to help you get on. If you don't have the braking gauge, it's going to roll away. You honestly may fall forward on your stomach, chest, and face. So, also the mounting and dismounting process, if it can be smooth and easy, and safe, eliminates a lot of the stress and fear of getting on and off. If you feel, if you ever have an accident mounting or dismounting, it may take away your excitement and motivation about riding your e-trike. So I always want people to have a safe, easy experience when mounting and dismounting so engaging the brakes will help that quite a bit.
