How Reverse Trike Steering Works: Tilting Steering on Electric Tricycle

Demonstrating how the independent steering of a reverse trike works.

Hey everyone, I'm Dustin. I have nearly 20 years of experience in the bike and e-bike industry. Today I'm gonna demonstrate how the independent lean of a two-front-wheel reverse trike works. All right. Right here, I've got the EZ Transit Reverse E-Trike from sixthreezero. And on the front here, it has the option where the front wheels can lean when you turn. Now, I've got some other videos on YouTube about this feature. It's cool. And it makes for very... Pinpoint turning, stable turning. Now, the caveat or difference between this type of trike steering and a conventional trike is you need to steer on this one. On a regular trike, you do need to steer, but what I mean by that is you need to steer or keep the handlebars balanced for the bike to balance. Now, you can see it does balance without me touching it, but if you tip it, it starts to go over, okay?

So, When you're up and moving, this adds stability with the two front wheels. But you do need to put your feet down on the ground when you're stationary. A big difference between a conventional trike with two wheels in the back. But what's cool is this drive system here and how it leans when you turn. And this learning mechanism allows both wheels to stay on the ground. So you see they operate together in that when one goes low, the other one goes high, but they are not moving in the same direction. So if you were to have a rigid fork, this would be very dangerous if you went over bumps because one wheel would pop up and you'd become unstable. In this situation, both front wheels will stay on the ground at all times. Now you can see I lean this way, both wheels stay on the ground at all times. See how far we can lean that. Now what we're gonna demonstrate to you today is we have a two-by-four here, and I'm gonna show you when we roll over that how this drive system works. All right, so I'm just gonna demonstrate. Here's our two-by-four.

I'm gonna just roll it over to show you how the axles work in the front here, and then we'll cut to a slow-mo clip of me riding. So you can see when the reverse trike comes up here, you can see the front wheel moves up, but the rear wheel stays on the ground. Now, that's key for stability and balance. If this was a rigid fork, this right wheel would be popping off the ground. So, this wheel comes up. Now, as we roll, this wheel comes down, and then this wheel comes up, and then you'll see how this wheel comes down. So, the ability of the axle to move up and down on each side allows both wheels to stay firmly planted on the ground. Now, I'll go ahead and ride in fast motion and you can just watch me go over it and then we'll slow down a clip so you can see exactly how it works. All right, here I come. And you can see I go up and straight over. And both my wheels stay on the ground at all times.

The Working Mechanism Of Reverse Etrike Steering

The steering is a new way to make the folding reverse e trike easier to trike. So, here is the working mechanism of the steering of an etrike.

Reverse eTrike steering works on a unique principle. Hence, it allows your reverse tricycle for better control & maneuverability in tight spaces.

It usually uses a handlebar system where turning the handlebar(s) in the contradictory direction in the desired movement of the front wheel of your folding reverse e trike initiates a turn.

The mechanism includes a linkage system that summarizes handlebar motion into backside wheel steering. Thus, it allows the back wheels to rotate while the front-side wheels stay stable.

This system generally includes a differential mechanism. Thus, it lets the wheels of your reverse etrike to turn at different angles during a turn. Moreover, it improves stability and reduces tire wear.

The reverse steering action also provides better control at lower speeds. So, this will allow the bike to be particularly useful for crowded areas or urban environments.

The setup features electronic sensors as well that help in real-time adjustments. As a result, it ensures precise steering response on the basis of the rider’s input.

This bike combines the safety features, like stability control systems. As a result, it prevents loss of control and tipping off during sharp turns.

The design of your reverse tricycle is generally compact and lightweight. Hence, it reduces the necessary effort by the rider and aids easier handling.

You can find this steering method in various types of folding reverse e trike. It further caters to recreational users and those needing easy transportation solutions.

Learning about reverse etrike steering shows how it can change the way we get around the cities. As technology improves, this smart steering will create better transportation options.
