How Much Does an Electric Bike Weigh? Heavy or Light, The Truth About the Weight of an EBike

How much can you expect an e-bike to weigh? Hey everyone, I'm Dustin. I have nearly 20 years of experience in the bike and e-bike industry. And today I'm gonna answer the question, how much can you expect an e-bike to weigh? Our Simple Step-Thru 20 inches and our Evryjourney, are two of our most popular e-bikes. Now, searching for an electric bike and maybe you're concerned about the weight or you're just curious, what does an electric bike weigh? Well, I've got two different e-bikes here. This is our 20 inch Simple Step-Thru, the 500-watt motor, and a 10.4 amp hour battery. This e-bike with a battery weighs 53 and a half pounds. Now the EvryJourney, 26-inch with the battery, same motor and battery size as the 20-inch over here, this weighs 59 pounds. Now both of these are aluminum frames, so it's gonna be a little bit of a lighter frame. Also, you can see the wheels, we have 2.125-inch tires. Some of the e-bikes have beefier tires, also beefier back racks. So, I would say typically the range of most e-bikes is going to be 50 pounds up to about 70-ish pounds approximately. Now, you're gonna add weight as you increase the tire size. If you add four-inch tires, that's gonna increase the weight, because you'll have four-inch rims as well.

Bigger batteries and bigger motors are also gonna have a very large impact. This is a 10.4 amp hour battery. If you were to up that to a 15 amp hour battery, you're gonna add about two pounds on right there alone. And if you were to bump to a 21 amp hour battery, you would add, say, another four pounds onto that approximately. So you're looking at maybe six more pounds if you double the size of the battery or nearly double the size of the battery. Also, a 750-watt motor is going to weigh a few pounds more than a 500-watt motor. So the typical range is going to be anywhere from 50 pounds to about 70 pounds, but it can go over 70 pounds depending on how much metal there is, the features they have, whether are there racks on there, are their baskets on there, are their fenders on there because every little component adds weight. So if you're concerned about the weight, you can always try to find a lighter-weight e-bike. However, with that said, when you try to opt for the lightest weight possible, you may lose motor size or battery size. So it's important to think about what is most important to you and also if you can find the perfect balance between the weight and also, the battery and motor size.
