How Far Do You Plan to Ride Your Adult Tricycle? Why an Electric Tricycle May be a Good Idea

How far do you plan to ride your adult tricycle?

Why an electric version may be a good idea. Hey everyone, I'm Dustin. I've nearly 20 years of experience in the bike and e-bike industry. And today we're gonna talk about and answer the question, how far do you plan to ride your adult tricycle and why an electric version may be a good idea? All right, three-wheel bikes or adult tricycles have been around for a long time. Very popular if you want something more stable, If you're not comfortable on two wheels, having those three-wheeled bikes is a great option for you.

Now, just recently over the last five years, electric three-wheeled bikes, and three three-wheeled e-bikes have become very popular, and for good reason. Having the electrical assist with three wheels makes it much easier to pedal. It's also increased the level of terrain you can tackle on a three-wheel bike that probably was fairly difficult to take on an adult tricycle. So if you're out there and you are searching for a tricycle right now, you probably want to think about where you plan on riding, how far you plan on riding, and then in addition to that I would ask you would you if there a possibility that maybe you would consider riding further on your adult trike if you could? The reason I bring that up is that on a three-wheel bike, you're gonna be pretty limited in terms of the terrain you can take on and how far you'll really wanna go.

Now, it's not impossible to say that you couldn't do 10, 15, or 20-mile rides on a traditional adult tricycle. But pedaling three wheels is much more difficult than pedaling two wheels. It's a heavier bike, there's more rubber on the road, it's more strain on your legs, and it just takes more effort. And if you think that, and if you're limited to, let's say there's some hills or somewhere that you would wanna go, and you couldn't do that on your three-wheel bike, so maybe you're limited to just going around your community or just going down the street. But if you had that electric motor, you could expand the distance you could go, you expand the terrain you could go. I've got two e-trikes right here, the EZ Transit. Both of these are electric, and they both have 750-watt motors. The beauty of it is now tricycles can easily take on hills. You have five levels of pedal assist and it can give you that extra kick as you see fit, or you can turn it off and not use it and pedal in manual. And when you're pedaling on flat ground, you won't even notice the difference between it being an electric bike versus not being electric. So what I believe is three-wheel bikes, they're gonna range in price typically from about 500 to maybe even up to 2000, that's non-electric, but I would say typically 500 to $800.

For about four to $500 more, you could step into getting an electric version of that same tricycle, and it would expand the possibilities of what you can do. So there's no downside to it, obviously more expensive at the purchase, but you would always have that option then to have that electric motor, which can give you peace of mind if you wanna ride a little further, use the electric coming back.

If you've never thought about it, I think it is something to consider. As an example too, we have a 250-watt electric tricycle that can give you just enough power in levels one or two to help give you assistance, again, to tackle some of those hills that maybe you would say to yourself, no, I can't do that, so I'm not gonna go there. With the motor, maybe now you can do it and you can go there. Or maybe there's a riding group and you were scared to keep up with them on your three-wheel bike, but now you could. Or maybe there were errands that you thought you wanted to do, but you didn't want to bring groceries because it was too heavy.

Now you have the electric motor. So if we're talking about spending a few hundred dollars more in exchange for being able to ride double what you maybe could do on a regular trike, I think it's a good value and it's something to consider. just really think hard about it, are you limiting yourself by getting a three-wheel bike? And are you missing things that maybe you used to do on a two-wheel bike, that now you could do with an electric version of a tricycle?
