Electric Trike or Regular Trike? - Which tricycle type is best for you?

Hey guys, I'm Dustin, and today I'm going to tell you why choose an electric tricycle versus a regular tricycle. Stick around.

All right, a tricycle. If you're in the market for a tricycle, let's say you have balance issues or you just want to be safer on three wheels, or you want it for the utility and the practicality of it because the trike has a nice big basket back here. Whatever the reason is, now you've got the option of an electric tricycle or a regular tricycle. I'm going to explain to you today why I think an electric tricycle is a better option than a regular tricycle.

As I said to you right here, I have the EvryJourney Electric Tricycle. Now, what makes an electric tricycle better than a regular tricycle is the ability to ride it as a regular bike if you so choose. With an electric tricycle or all electric bikes, the battery's going to be removable. You can take the battery off here and reduce the bike by about eight pounds. Now, between the motor and the battery, you're adding approximately 15 pounds to the bike. Now we've removed the battery and you're down to seven pounds. I'm just going to go ahead and put this right here.

Okay, now essentially we've cut off the power. You can see here in the front hub, this is the motor. Now it's not incredibly heavy. I can lift the bike pretty simply. The only thing that is on this bike right now that's different than a regular tricycle is this front hub contained with the motor in it. Now I'm just going to show you how I ride this bike like a regular bike. You can see it's essentially no different. Riding on flat ground, you'll see no difference between riding this bike or a regular tricycle, because essentially this is a regular tricycle, right? And it's easy for me to pedal. The reason, one, I would go with an electric trike is you always have the option to ride this as a regular bike. You don't have to use electricity if you so choose. Okay?

Now the thing is, a lot of people are saying, "Oh, it's more expensive. You're going to spend more money." Absolutely you are, but you're going to get so much more out of this tricycle than you would a regular tricycle. And here's why. With this pedal assist and throttle option, you are going to be able to ride farther, ride more different terrain, and also ride faster. Essentially you're turning this tricycle into a practical form of transportation. Let me show you a little bit.

When you hop on the bike, you have five levels of pedal assist, one through five. In the fifth level of pedal assist, you're going to be able to hit speeds of 20 miles an hour depending on the rider of the weight and the terrain. Also in the throttle mode, you're going to be able to hit speeds of up to 18, somewhere between 15 to 18, I'm 215 pounds. In the throttle mode, I can hit about 15, 16. Pedal assist, I can get to about 18. Somebody 150, 60, and 70 pounds would have no problem reaching 20 miles an hour in pedal assist.

Let's say you want to go 20 miles, but you're not confident you can go on a trike 20 miles. The other thing is, there's a lot of drag with three wheels on the ground. Not a lot of people want to ride a regular trike, 10, 15, 20 miles, right? When you have this pedal assist, now if you choose, I can just do the throttle. Let's say you need a break, you want to rest your legs, you kick in the throttle, or I can just do pedal assist. I pedal and watch, you're going to see, and there goes the motor kicking in. It's going to expand the capabilities of what you can do with your trike.

In my mind, choosing an electric trike is a better option than a regular trike because of how much more you can get out of it. Now the other thing is carrying loads. Let's say you legitimately do want to go grocery shopping and you want to put 20, 30, 40, or 50 pounds in there. If you're riding a regular tricycle, that is going to drastically weigh down the bike. With the motor, now the motor can help you bring that load along and take off the resistance that you would have to deal with under your power. Again, it's going to give you the ability, to go to the grocery store, load this up, bring it home, and use the assistance if you should need it.

In addition to that, on this e-trike, we have regular gears here too. You have seven speeds. If you want to go up hills in regular mode or go up hills in pedal assist, or go fast on flat ground now, you've got a one through seven gear and that's going to just make riding all over the place that much easier as well.

You are going to get 30 to 50 miles of range depending on how you ride the bike. You're going to hit top speeds of up to 20 miles an hour, and in addition to that, you're going to get a similar frame, right? If you're looking at a regular trike or an e-trike, the frame is the same. As an example, on this bike, you're going to get the step through. You can step through, easy on and off, you're mounted, and you're coming down and you're getting off. Everything is the same except adding a little bit of weight. Sure, adding some cost, but the possibilities become so much greater.

For some people also, moving to a trike may be something that feels disappointing, or feels like you can't ride a two-wheel bike. Quite honestly, this bike is a lot of fun and when you add the electric in there, you can do everything you always had done and more. And if you're just looking for something practical for utility, this is so much greater than a regular trike.

In my opinion, for all those points, an electric trike is a better investment than a regular trike. You get so much more out of it, go farther, do more with it.
