E-Bikes & Bikes Customised to You
Understanding the range of your electric tricycle. How far will it go? Hey everyone, I'm Dustin. I have 20 years of experience in the bike and e-bike industry. And today we're going to talk about the range of an electric tricycle and determining how far it's going to go. All right. Now, there are a lot of advertised ranges of e-bikes, and e-trikes out there. That's definitely one of the most common questions, how far is the range? Now, one thing before I get into it also, I've got three e-trikes here from sixthreezero. We specialize in electric tricycles. All right. Now, there are a lot of advertised ranges of e-bikes, and e-trikes out there. That's definitely one of the most common questions, how far is the range? Now, one thing before I get into it also, I've got three e-trikes here from sixthreezero. We specialize in electric tricycles. Okay. Now, just like electric cars, there's an advertised range that you can get on an e-car, an e-bike, or an e-trike. And generally, companies are going to test those products under certain conditions, right? Generally, flat ground riding or driving, and then also... at a certain speed limit, and then also a certain weight that you'd have on the bike or the car. So when you see the published range of any e-bike or any e-trike out there, it's going to be, generally speaking, best best-case scenario. Now at sixthreezero, we give some ranges on our product pages based on what level of pedal assist you're using, if you're using the throttle, and things like that. But determining the exact range you are going to get out of your electric tricycle is going to be hard for any company to tell you. So we say up to 50 miles because any of our e-trikes can get you up to 50 miles on a single charge.
It's going to depend really on three major factors for your range. Cargo that you're bringing on your e-trike. Now, the heavier the rider, the more cargo you're bringing, and the less range you're going to get out of your electric tricycle. The motor is going to have to work harder. The battery is going to have to supply more power. Thus, you're going to drain that battery quicker, which is going to minimize the range you're going to get off your electric tricycle. Now, number two is how you use the electric assist. A lot of e-trikes, all of ours, come with a throttle that you can press and the tricycle can move without you pedaling at all. Or you can use it in assistance mode. Generally, there are five levels of assistance. One, two, three, four, five. Level one is the lowest. Level five is the highest. And if you are constantly running in level five pedal assist, you're going to drain the battery quicker because that's giving you the most assistance from the motor, which again, requires more battery power, motor to work harder, drains the battery quicker. So the combination and the assist level. So if you use the assist a little bit, then turn it off. If you use the throttle the entire way and then switch to the pedal assist, all those combinations determine ultimately how far you can go on your electric tricycle. So it's hard to come up with an exact formula because there are millions of combinations of how you could take on a certain ride. In terms of what level of pedal assist you can do, the weight of the rider, all of those factors. Now, the third biggest impact you're going to have on the range is, of course, going to be the terrain. If you're going mostly on flat ground, nine times out of ten, you're probably going to get longer distances than the published range. I, as an example, have gone on flat ground on our electric tricycles, and I've been able to go far more than what we publicized because it's just not pushing the motor as hard as hills are.
Now, if you're riding a lot of hilly terrain, you are going to drain the battery much quicker, especially if you're riding hilly terrain in level five pedal assist. So it's something to consider when you're out riding and the type of hills you're taking on so you can match up your needs with the correct electric tricycle product. So those are three of the major factors. There are also other factors, like tire size and of course the weight of the product. Like right here, I have our Rickshaw. This weighs 132 pounds compared to this recumbent e-trike is 92. And then our Two Front Wheels and our EZ Transit, which weighs about 70 pounds. So you reduce the weight, you can get more range. Now, obviously, with some of our bigger trikes like our rickshaw, we have a larger battery. So we're trying to compensate for these factors that are going to decrease the range like the weight of the rickshaw and the tire size by giving it a larger battery so those are things to consider too if you're looking for an e-trike if you are looking for something with fat tires you want to have a little bit larger of a battery if you're going to go out tackle hills and ride long ranges. Now if you have thinner tires like the two front wheels it's going to roll a little easier. There's less drag thus you don't need as much power to move the product and if it's lighter. It'll also move a lot easier so you can have a little bit of a smaller battery. So again, the best thing you can do once you get your e-trike is get out, hit the odometer on your screen, or track it on your phone and start to log miles in relation to how much you drain the battery on a given ride. Over time, you're going to get a feel for your typical rides, how much you drain the battery, and how much range you get. Then you can start to figure out different combinations. Maybe use the pedal assist a little bit less or turn down the level of pedal assist. Maybe use the throttle only on flat ground. All of these things can maximize the range of your battery on your electric tricycle.
