Electric Tricycle Motor Size - What Level of Power do you Need?

Okay, Peter here at sixthreezero. Let's talk a little bit about power on your e-tricycle.

So with an e-tricycle, you can have different levels of power, obviously, and there are different preferences. Some people want more power and some people want less power. On our e-tricycle, we have a 36-volt battery and a 250-watt motor, which we think at the moment is pretty good for what most of our riders want. However, some people do want a more powerful motor and more battery, so we're actually working on a tricycle that will do that. But what's really interesting is that even though this is kind of on the lower end of power with the 250-watt motor and the 36-volt battery, a lot of our customers actually find even that just to be a little bit more powerful than they're used to, especially in the first week or two if they're riding it. So it's really just about preference. If you haven't bought one yet, I'm not really sure how to explain to you how much power you want, except that maybe you can try and test-ride some bikes. Obviously, that's not possible with ours because of e-commerce.

But you want to know what your level of speed is. For instance, a bike like this can go plenty fast. It can go up to 20 miles an hour on flats. However, depending on your weight and going up a hill, it will be slower. So sometimes people want more power, not for the speed necessarily, but so that they can go up a hill. If you're weighing between 100 and 150 pounds or whatever, that's pretty light for an e-trike. You're going to kind of zip around wherever you go. If you're getting closer to 200 pounds, it's still going to carry your weight up a hill nicely, but it's not going to be super speedy. If you weigh more than 200 pounds, 250, 300 or so like that, you definitely could use more power in the motor and more volts in the battery. So that could be a reason to get more power in your e-trike.

So like I said, right now we have ours powered on the lower end. We think it's great because it's a pretty speedy tricycle and for a lot of the demographic that likes to ride e-trikes, it's plenty of power. And even like I said, for a lot of people it kind of feels like too much power at first. But again, if you're heavier you are going to encounter some hills, more power may be helpful for you. They're all going to be limited to 20 miles an hour. So as far as speed goes it's not going to matter that much. But as far as pickup or maybe getting up the hill, it will make a difference.

Again, as I said before, a lot of our customers really do prefer not having too much power because it just feels kind of overwhelming to them. Okay, I truly hope that that was helpful to you.
