Do You Pedal an Electric Bike? Understanding How an E Bike Works

Do you pedal an electric bike?

Hey, everyone. I'm Dustin. I have nearly 20 years of experience in the bike and e-bike industry. And today, we're going to answer the question, do you pedal an electric bike? I've got the sixthreezero simple step-thru easy mounting, dismounting e-bike, and also the EvryJourney, which is the ultra-comfortable forward pedaling e-bike. All right. let's say you are getting into e-biking, don't know too much about it, and you're curious, do you pedal an electric bike? Well, there are two answers to that. Yes or no. Three answers. Yes or no. And you don't have to, depending on the e-bike. So, electric bikes are set up to be bicycles, first and foremost, and with a motor added to the bicycle. Now, e-bike frames and styles are getting very different and variated and there are all sorts of shapes and sizes. But in the truest sense of calling an electric bicycle a bicycle, you should be able to pedal that bike. Now, if you can't pedal, in theory, it would no longer be classified as a bicycle. But you're seeing a lot of different shapes and sizes and people are pushing the boundaries with their designs, of how an electric bike looks. No matter how it looks, if it's got pedals and a crank with a chain connected to the back and you can pedal, then it's a bicycle and you can pedal it.

Now, with that said, a lot of electric bikes come with a throttle. A throttle is like a gas pedal on a car, except we call it a throttle because it's located up here by your hand. In this case on sixthreezero bikes, we use two different types. Now, one type that's commonly found on our e-bikes is called a thumb throttle, located usually by your left hand here, and you use your thumb to push the throttle as you want to accelerate or not accelerate. So in that case, if you're using the thumb throttle, you do not need to pedal. Nothing needs to happen with your feet or your legs if you're using the throttle to make the bike go. You can just leave your feet on the pedal don't have to pedal at all. There's also another option for a throttle, which is called a twist throttle, which is usually on your right hand here and you literally twist your wrist back to go, twist it forward to ease the motor in. Now in that situation, if you have those, you don't have to pedal at all. The other thing I will touch on is if you have a pedal assist when you pedal, the assistance will kick in and it will give you assistance while you pedal. Now sometimes with the pedal assist also you don't have to pedal a lot you can pedal a little bit the assistance will push you and you can coast quite a bit so you still need to pedal to actuate the motor or get assistance from the motor but then you can coast and glide a lot more than you could on a bike without a motor or motor assistance so on an electric bike you have to be able to pedal for it to classify it as an electric bike but you don't have to pedal if you have a throttle.

Understanding The Working Of An Ebike

Ebikes are changing how we travel. Knowing how they work helps riders choose the right one and enjoy the benefits of easy and eco-friendly transportation. So, here is how it works:

Pedal Assist Ebikes

Many ebikes have a pedal assist option, which means the motor helps you as you pedal. The more you pedal, the more the motor helps, making it easier to ride faster or longer. You still need to pedal to get the help, but it’s much easier than riding a regular bike. You can coast after you pedal, but you will still need to pedal to activate the motor help.

Ebike Throttle

Some ebikes have a throttle, like a scooter or a motorbike. This lets you control the motor without pedaling at all! You can twist or push the throttle and cruise around without using your legs. It’s a great transportation option if you want to ride in a relaxed way. There are 2 different types of throttle you must know –

  1. Thumb Throttle – Located near your left hand, you need to push it with your thumb to ride at a faster pace.
  2. Twist Throttle – Installed on the right handlebar, you can twist it like the grip on a motorbike to go.

With a throttle, you don’t need to pedal – the motor does all the work.

Understanding how ebikes work makes riding more enjoyable. They offer fun, efficient, and friendly ways to get around, whether for daily commutes or leisure rides.
