Do you need a throttle on your e-bike? Hey everyone, I'm Dustin. I have nearly 20 years of experience in the bike and e-bike industry and today we're gonna answer the question, do you need a throttle on your electric bike? All right, real quick before I jump into it, I've got four electric bikes right here with a throttle. So go ahead and follow that if any four of these pique your interest. Now, electric bikes. In America, you can have a throttle on your e-bike, which can prevent you from having to pedal at all. Typically, the throttle can be located in one of two places. It can be a twist throttle, where you twist the grip, and, not the grip, but the piece right here and like a motorcycle, and it goes, or you can have what's called a thumb throttle, which you press right here, and the bike goes. Now, if the motor is turned on, and you press that throttle, you will not have to pedal at all. The bike will go without you pedaling. Now, there's also another option where you can get electric bikes without the throttle. You can have it just be a pedal assist-only e-bike.
Now, do you need a throttle on your electric bike? Of course, you do not need it. You can get your electric bike with pedal assist only, meaning that the electric assist will only work when you pedal. So when you pedal, the motor will kick in and start to assist you. Now, the benefit of having a throttle is a couple of things. One, it's a great tool to utilize from a stopped, a dead stop. So a lot of people like to press the throttle, it gets the bike rolling, at which point then you start pedaling. So it's a great tool to, as I said, get moving, especially like if you stop the bike in a higher gear, and so it's kind of difficult to pedal, use the throttle, get the wheels moving, becomes easier to start pedaling at that point. The other cool benefit is if you go on a very long ride, and let's say you still use the pedal assist but your legs are tired, give yourself a little break, use the throttle for a mile, two miles, three miles, totally up to you, while you rest your legs, and then you start pedaling whenever you see fit again. So it's a cool tool to help extend rides, to alleviate tiring out your legs in any given circumstance. And quite honestly, they're a lot of fun. And if you just want to tour around and you don't want to do much pedaling, it's a nice option to have. Now, on the flip side, if you want nothing to do with the throttle and you're scared of it and you don't want to utilize it in any way, shape, or form, there are e-bikes out there that don't have them.
Another option is you can also disconnect the throttle. So on any of these sixthreezero e-bikes, you could unplug it, remove the throttle, and then be left with a pedal assist-only e-bike. Now, I think if you can get used to using the throttle, understand how to safely use it, and how to safely mount and dismount while having a throttle on your e-bike, it is a huge advantage in certain situations. I love having the throttle, like I said, for starting, also, for some small hills, I like to go throttle only, give my legs a break. It's also fun when you just want to go a little bit faster, feel the wind in your hair, and not exert any energy at all. That option is there as well. So, you don't need a throttle, but it's a lot of fun and can be very practical at times to have.
