Do electric bikes have a warranty?

Hey everyone, I'm Dustin. I have nearly 20 years of experience in the bike and e-bike industry and today we're going to answer the question, do electric bikes have a warranty? All right, let's say you're in the market for an electric bike or you have an electric bike. You're wondering, does your e-bike have a warranty? Now, 9 times out of 10, yes, your e-bike will have a warranty. Now, warranties can vary a little bit from brand to brand. At Sixthreezero, we offer a one-year warranty. We're going to cover everything on your e-bike, including the parts, the labor, the battery, you name it.

Now, some of the less expensive e-bikes, maybe $500 or less or $1,000 or less. I can't speak to their warranties, I would expect they have some level of warranty, but the warranty is going to move in relation to the price of the e-bike. The more expensive the e-bike, the better the warranty should be, and most likely is. The less expensive the e-bike, the less the warranty is going to be. So that's something to consider. If you want to buy an inexpensive e-bike and you're not worried if it craps out on you, then no big deal. You can always replace the e-bike, something $300 to $400 E-bikes. They exist out there, $500. I can't imagine. The warranty is going to be great. But the other thing too is most times there are going to be limited or differing elements of the warranty on electric bikes. So a lot of times you're going to see the warranty applicable to different elements of the e-bike. The battery may have one warranty, the frame may have one warranty. Tires may be excluded from warranties. In a lot of situations they are, we do exclude the tires because the minute the e-bike is ridden, it's hard to tell what causes an issue with a tire, if a tube went flat or something of that nature.

So it's going to be very common for bikes and e-bikes to see the warranty broken down into many segments. In particular, because a lot of frames, frames can typically be warrantied for longer than certain components of a bike or e-bike. Also, batteries. Batteries are an interesting one because lithium-ion batteries as you own them over time, and there are issues that can happen if the customer is overcharging. I have a Tesla as an example and they always send messages. They don't want you to fully charge it. Teslas only recommend charging to about 85% of the capacity of the battery. The more times you charge it to full, the less the battery life gets.

So these just become harder elements to warranty over a certain period of time. Now again, we warranty for a year. There are bike brands out there that warranty for two years on batteries. You will find that those e-bikes are going to be more expensive. So it's up to you how you want to make that exchange. If you're willing to pay more for the e-bike in exchange for a better warranty. But I would say it's common practice to see at least a year on the motor and the battery. Anything over that is going to be a bonus. The hard part becomes warrantying parts that you don't know how many miles are ridden. So for an e-bike brand, cars are typically warranted by mileage or there's some combination of both five years or 100,000 miles.

E-bikes right now are being warranted mostly on the length of ownership. Even though it's difficult because of an e-bike, a person may ride their e-bike 1,000 plus or several hundred... I don't know what I am saying, 30,000 miles in the first two months, and then all of a sudden the bike craps out. Well, it's not really like that bike was bad or that e-bike was bad. It was just that it got ridden the amount of mileage that some people maybe wouldn't ride for two to three years.

So now on the flip side of that, if you only ride your bike a few miles, then the one year comes and it's out of warranty. That's also unfortunate as well. Or if you have it even for two years and the batteries die and you barely use it. Now lithium ion batteries are also the type of product where if you don't charge it and you're not regularly using it over time it will just die.

So that's something to also keep in mind in terms of the warranty. If you're not using your e-bike, keep charging it. Try to keep using it a little bit here and there to keep that battery active because again, if you let it sit idle, the battery will die. So if that does happen to you, try to check on it to make sure within your warranty period that you have no issues at all. So e-bikes should all have warranties. I would be leery of any e-bike company that doesn't have a warranty. And just make sure you align the warranty that's best for you with the price that you want to pay.
