Can You Twist an Electric Trike Throttle with Arthritis in Your Hands? Kelly Shows You How

Hi, I'm Kelly, and today I'm going to show you how I use my Twist throttle on my e-trike. I have arthritis in my hands, and you can kind of tell, like, this hand is bigger than this one is. I've had arthritis longer in my left hand than I have in my right hand, and usually it bothers me, like, down through this area right here and around, anywhere around my thumb and my wrist on the inside part of it. So, using the throttle on the e-track, I thought it might be a problem, but so far, I haven't had any problems with it. I've also got the handbrakes, thought, oh, that could pose a problem too. No problems with that either, okay? So I just twist it. I turn my wrist a little bit, but not too much. When I'm slowing down, I just kind of let it slow down through my fingers and let it go. So I'm gonna try to give you some close-ups of that today while we go for a ride. And hope you enjoy it. So as you can see, I'm just kind of slowing down. We're getting onto a main road in town. And so I've slowed down and pulled out. And I kind of twist with my finger and my thumb, my forefinger and thumb, on the throttle. And then just hold it. Once you get going, you really don't have to do too much. I really hope that some of the tips help you out with making a decision when you're trying to decide on an e-bike, an e-trike.

I, again, like the fact that this is a recumbent bike, so my pedals are out in front of me some. That helps a lot with arthritis in my knees. The twist throttle is not a problem at all with the arthritis in my hands, so that's nice, just in case you're wondering about that. Using the brakes is also easy. Make a turn onto a surface road on one of our expressways here in town. So, slow it down. I've let off the throttle completely. And using my brakes to slow down to stop at the stop sign to make this turn. So, here we go. Out on the surface road. And the way that this bike is built, it's nice and sturdy. So if you're like me, I'm 60 and I'm overweight, have arthritis all through my body. And so this, it's nice to be able to get out and just enjoy a day like this. The seat is so nice. It's so comfortable. And the fat tires really do help with your ride. Okay, again, another stop sign. So I'm cutting off the throttle, using my brakes. I usually use boat brake when I'm stopping just to kind of help even that out a little bit.

So one thing I did not mention earlier is the little red button here. So if you're traveling along and you need to stop quickly, this button right here will kill the throttle for you, and you'll be able to stop a little bit quicker. So that's a little red button that's your friend. So keep that in mind. Also, I want you to look up here at our screen so you can see where my battery life is with what we call the energy bar. Um, this is the speed. Uh, my pedal assist is at one, even though I'm not pedaling at all, you have to have the pedal assist at least on, uh, something above zero. And, um, then the mileage. So when we left our house today, I was at 128. So we've ridden close to 20 miles, and I still have about half the battery life. So that's pretty good. Especially since I was riding against the wind half the way and still using full assist with the throttle.
