Can a 500 Watt EBike Get a 230lb Rider Up a Hill? Will it Make It? Electric Bikes for Heavier People

Can this 500-watt electric bike get me up a hill at 230 pounds? Hey everyone, I'm Dustin. I have nearly 20 years of experience in the bike and e-bike industry. And today I'm gonna show you if this 500-watt Step-Thru e-bike can get me up a hill at 230 pounds. All right, so this is the Simple Step-Thru e-bike from sixthreezero. The name is because of this very low step-through frame right here, which is the lowest step-through height of any e-bike on the market. That comes in at only 11 inches, so very easy to mount and dismount. Now, it's a 500-watt rear hub motor, so you can get up to speeds of 20 miles an hour with the throttle 22 and pedal assist. And the range of the battery is going to be up to 50 miles on a single charge. So we're going to take you over to a hill and I'm going to show you how this e-bike will perform with me at 230 pounds going up the hill. All right. So we're going to navigate over to the hill. And you can see my controls here. I got my throttle here. I can push that and stop pedaling. And got my gears over here. Now the gears are unrelated to the electric. These are just, you know, your standard bicycle gears. Now, you know, when you're climbing a hill it's always going to be beneficial to, have the gear in the lowest possible gear. And when you're at more of a cruising speed, depending on what pedal assist you're in, you're going to want to be in a higher gear. So like right now, I'm in pedal assist three. I could crank this up to my top gear, which is seven. It gets harder to pedal, but the resistance of the pedaling matches the pedal assist better when we get higher up. Alright, I'm going to downshift as I come to a stop. Alright, so let's go ahead and just do throttle only for the first run. Now you can see no pedaling at all. And I've just got my thumb down on the throttle here. And we are going eight. Now we're slowing down a little bit. Seven miles an hour. Now, at 230, 250, you know, you're not going to fly up the hill by just going throttle only. So even in a 750-watt e-bike. And this is a pretty decent grade.

I know we always get a lot of comments saying, oh, it's, you know, not a big hill. Come to New Hampshire or, you know, but San Clemente here, we got big hills. This is a pretty decent grade. So we're cruising along at seven point four. And you can see I am still not pedaling. And just doing throttle only. And we made it. As we start to level out, you're going to see the miles per hour start to accelerate. And now we start to climb faster and faster. All right. From here, we're going to turn back and I'm going to show you pedal assist. All right. So I'm going to loop back down and then we'll show you what it looks like in pedal assist. OK, now we are going to show you in pedal assist. How it does on the hill for me. I'm going to go ahead and put it up into five. And you're going to see with the pedal assist, we get up the hill a lot quicker and easier. And I have it in seventh gear, the highest gear. So if you wanted it to be easier to pedal, you could put it in first, but now you can see I'm averaging about two miles an hour faster than almost three by doing pedal assist and I'm not exerting that much effort, but it's just enough to make it that much more efficient. There we have it. We are up the hill and made it. I'm going to go ahead and pull over to the side here. All right, so there you have it. I'm 230 pounds. The 500-watt step-through e-bike did just fine for me. We can do throttle only.

The pedal assist gets up a lot quicker, but it has enough power for my body size.
