Setting Up a Real Hill Climb Test

I've spent close to twenty years in the bike and e-bike industry, and if there's one question I hear more than any other, it's some version of this: will this thing actually get me up a hill? Not a gentle rise. Not a slight grade you'd barely notice in a car. A real hill, the kind that makes your legs burn on a regular bike and makes you wonder whether pedal assist is marketing or muscle.

So I decided to answer it directly. I took our Relaxed Body semi-recumbent e-bike, the 500-watt Deluxe, and rode it up a legitimate climb here in San Clemente, California. No editing tricks, no picking the easy stretch and calling it a day. I wanted to start at the bottom and grind all the way to the top, so you could see exactly what a 500-watt motor does when the road tilts up and a full-sized adult is sitting in the saddle.

Here's the honest problem with hill videos, and anyone who films them knows it. A camera flattens everything. I'll be halfway up a grade that has my heart working, and the footage makes it look like a parking lot. I read the comments. People say, that's not a hill. And they're not wrong to be skeptical, because the lens genuinely does not capture grade the way your legs do. It's the single most frustrating thing about trying to show a climb on video.

This time I tried something different. Before the climb, I stood back and shot the hill from a distance, the one rising up behind me toward the top of San Clemente, so you could take a good look and judge it for yourself. Decent grade. Decent length. The kind of hill you can point at and say, okay, that counts. Then I dropped down to the bottom to start the ride, because the base of that climb was still a good mile or two from where I filmed the wide shot.

The plan was to ride from the bottom up toward where the road curves near the top, past the Target, up to one of the stoplights, and then a bit farther still, maybe another two or three hundred yards up the grade. I'll tell you now, I ended up going well past the point I promised, but I'll get to that.

One detail matters more than any other before we start, and that's rider weight. I'm 230 pounds. That's not a small rider, and it's the number I want you to keep in mind the entire way up. Weight is the single biggest thing working against you on a climb. If a 500-watt motor can haul me and this bike up a real grade without drama, then a lighter rider is going to have an even easier time of it: less effort, lower assist levels, more battery left in the tank at the top. When I test a hill, I'd rather be the heavy end of the range than the light end, because it tells you the honest ceiling of what the bike can do.

San Clemente is a good place to run a test like this, because it is genuinely hilly. If you know the town, you know you can't ride far without the road going up. That makes it easy to find a climb that isn't manufactured for a video. And the bike I'm doing it on isn't some stripped-down hill machine. It's one of our comfort-focused electric bikes, built around a relaxed, upright riding position rather than an aggressive racing stance. That's part of what makes the test interesting. Comfort and climbing power don't always go together, and I wanted to see whether you really can have both.

Down at the base, the grade starts gentle. It eases you in with a smaller pitch and then builds as you go, getting steeper the higher you climb, which is exactly how you want a test hill to behave, because it separates the motor feels strong off the line from the motor still has something left when it actually gets hard. I got into position below the climb, and I decided to start out simple: just the throttle, no pedaling, letting the motor do the talking while the grade was still mellow.

I'll also say up front what I always tell people who watch these: the climb is going to look less intimidating on camera than it felt in person. That's not me hedging, it's just the reality of filming grade. So watch the wide shot, trust the rider weight number, and judge the bike by whether it kept moving, not by whether the footage looks dramatic. With that said, let's get into it.

The Climb, From the Bottom to the Top

The bottom of the climb went exactly the way I hoped. I rolled in on throttle only, no pedaling at all, and the bike pulled me up the early grade without complaint. This is the part where a lot of riders get a false sense of things, because almost any motor feels strong when the hill is shallow. The real question is what happens two-thirds of the way up. So I kept the throttle rolling and let the grade build.

Past the first stretch, the road leveled out a little near the Target, then started climbing again, and this is where it began to get steeper. You can see it in the footage if you watch the horizon line: the pitch gets more serious the higher you go. I hit a short flat section, caught a crosswalk, pushed the button, waited to cross, and then it was back into the grade. From here on, it stopped being a warm-up and started being an actual climb.

When it got steep enough to matter, I started pedaling. Here's the exact setup I was running: pedal assist level five, and I had the bike in gear seven. That's a personal preference, and I want to explain it because it trips people up. A lot of riders assume you climb in a low gear. I actually like the cadence I get in the higher gears on this bike. It feels right to me, it keeps my legs turning at a rhythm I like, and paired with level-five assist it gave me plenty to get up the grade. Your preference might be different, and that's fine. The point is I wasn't in some magic granny gear making it easy on myself. I was in seven, in the assist level most people would reach for on a hill, carrying 230 pounds.

A quick word on starting with the throttle, because it's a habit worth building. Easing into a climb on throttle lets you feel the grade before you commit your legs. You get a read on how steep it really is, you keep momentum through the mellow bottom section, and you save your energy for the part that actually demands it. On a longer climb you don't want to be gassed halfway up because you attacked the easy part. Roll in on throttle, then add your legs and bump the assist when the road stands up. That's the rhythm that got me to the top with something to spare.

And we climbed. No problem. I'd told everyone watching that we'd stop at one of the stoplights near the top, and when I got there, the bike still had so much left that I figured, why stop? So I kept going to the next light. Then past that too. This is the section where the grade gets genuinely severe, the steepest pitch of the whole climb, and I wanted to push into it on purpose so you could see the bike work when it actually got hard.

I made a point of stopping somewhere I could turn around and show you what we'd covered, because that's the payoff of a climb like this: looking back down and seeing the distance and the drop. We went farther than I first said we would. Past the stoplight, past the next one, all the way up to where the road crests.

Then we reached the peak. Officially the top. I turned around, showed the hills stacking up in the background, and pointed back down at the grade we'd just come up, the same hill I'd shot from a distance at the start so you could see it was the real thing. We did the whole thing, bottom to top, on the Relaxed Body Deluxe 500-watt. No problem.

Here's the part I care about most, and it's the honest bottom line: I was not winded. At 230 pounds, after a real climb, I got off the bike with plenty in the tank and a smile on my face, because it was genuinely fun. And I'll repeat what I said at the top, because it's the most useful thing I can tell you. If you weigh less than I do, this climb would be even easier, and you could do it in a lower assist level and save more battery. I rode it hard on purpose. Most riders won't have to.

What this climb really shows isn't a number, it's a feeling. A 500-watt motor under a 230-pound rider on a steepening grade never bogged down, never left me mashing the pedals and going nowhere, never made me question whether I'd make it. That's the whole point of a boost. You still ride the bike, you still turn the cranks, but the hill stops being the thing that decides whether you go out at all. What Makes the Relaxed Body Climb So Comfortably

Let me back up and talk about the bike itself, because the riding position is the whole reason the Relaxed Body exists, and it's what makes a climb like that one feel the way it does. This is a semi-recumbent e-bike. Semi is the important word. You are not lying back like you're in a lawn chair. You're sitting relatively upright, but the pedals are pushed out in front of your body rather than sitting directly beneath you.

On this bike the pedals are moved forward about fourteen inches. That forward-pedaling geometry does a couple of things at once. It lets the seat sit lower to the ground, so you can plant your feet flat when you stop, which is a big deal for confidence, especially at a light on a hill. And it changes your pedal stroke from a downward stomp into more of a forward push, which takes pressure off your knees and lets your legs extend properly through the stroke.

Then there are the handlebars. They sweep back and come into your body, so you're not reaching or stretching forward to hold on. Your arms, shoulders, and lower back stay relaxed. Put the low seat, the forward pedals, and the swept-back bars together and you get a riding position that's about as easy on the body as an e-bike gets, which is exactly why it lives in our comfort lineup rather than anything sporty.

Here's what surprises people: that comfort doesn't cost you anything on a hill. If anything, it helps. When your back and shoulders aren't tensing up to hold an aggressive position, and your knees aren't taking the load at a bad angle, you can actually pedal longer and add your own effort to the motor's without wearing out. On my climb, being able to sit relaxed and just turn the cranks in a comfortable rhythm is part of why I got to the top without feeling wrung out. A position that fights your body makes every grade feel worse than it is.

The low frame and low seat also make getting on and off simple, which matters more than people admit. A bike you can step onto easily is a bike you'll actually ride. You don't have to swing a leg high over the frame or balance awkwardly to climb aboard.

Because the seat and stem adjust, the bike fits a wide span of riders. The saddle deserves a mention of its own. A soft, supportive seat is doing quiet work on every ride, especially a longer one, and it's one of the first things you notice sitting on the Relaxed Body. Most riders find the semi-recumbent position and the stock saddle together already do the job, and on a comfort bike that's the point: nothing about the setup should be reminding you it's there while you ride.

It's for the person who's been nervous about balance, or about a saddle that leaves them sore, or about a frame that's a chore to climb onto. Throttle, Pedal Assist, and Gearing: How to Actually Climb a Hill

The climb is a good excuse to explain how you actually use an e-bike on hills, because the throttle and the pedal assist are two different tools, and knowing when to reach for each one changes your whole ride. The good news is that every one of our electric bikes gives you both.

Pedal assist, level by level

Pedal assist is the heart of the bike. You turn the motor on, you pedal, and the motor adds power in proportion to the level you've selected. Stop pedaling and the assist stops too. This bike has five levels. Level one gives you a gentle nudge; level five gives you the most help the motor has. On flat ground, one through three is usually plenty, enough to make the ride effortless without shoving you along faster than you want. When the road tips up, you climb the levels. On my hill I was in level five, because I'm 230 pounds and I wanted the full picture of what the motor could do. A lighter rider, or a gentler grade, and I'd have been happy in three or four.

Why gearing still matters

Here's something new riders miss: an e-bike still has gears, and they still do their job. The assist level decides how much the motor helps; the gear decides how your own pedaling translates to the wheel. I climbed in gear seven because I like the cadence it gives me. The rhythm of my legs at that gear feels right, and with level-five assist behind it, I had all the help I needed. Plenty of riders prefer to drop into a lower gear on a climb so their legs spin easier. Neither is wrong. The trick is to find the gear where your cadence feels natural and let the assist level cover the rest of the effort. If you're grinding and struggling, shift down and let your legs spin; if you're spinning out with no resistance, shift up. Your knees will tell you when you've got it right.

The throttle, and what it's really for

The throttle is the other half of the system. Push it or twist it and the motor drives the bike whether or not you're pedaling. On my climb I started on throttle alone to ease into the grade, and that's one of the throttle's best uses: getting you moving, holding momentum through a mellow stretch, or giving your legs a rest mid-ride. It's also genuinely handy for low-speed maneuvering, easing up a ramp, nudging through a parking lot, creeping across an intersection. Because you meter the power with your hand, you get fine control at slow speeds where pedaling would feel clumsy.

One honest caveat: leaning on the throttle alone drains the battery faster than pedal assist does. When you throttle without pedaling, the motor carries the entire load, and that costs energy. It's the reason I don't recommend riding throttle-only for a whole trip if range matters to you. The smart move, the one that gets you the longest ride and the easiest climbs, is to blend the two. Pedal with assist most of the time, roll on the throttle when you want a break or a boost, and you'll cover serious distance without babying the battery.

A note on speed, because people always ask: how fast you go and how far you get depend on a stack of factors, your weight, the grade, the wind, how much you pedal versus throttle, and which assist level you're in. That's why I won't quote you a single magic number here. The specific top speed and range for the Relaxed Body are listed on its product page, and even those figures assume real-world conditions will move them around. What I can tell you from the saddle is that on this climb, with a heavy rider and a steep finish, the bike had power to spare.

Don't forget the way down

Climbing gets all the attention, but the descent deserves a thought too. What goes up comes back down, and on a comfortable cruiser you can pick up more speed on a downhill than you expect. Give yourself extra room to slow down, feather the brakes rather than grabbing them, keep your head up for traffic and cross streets, and wear a helmet, especially if you're going to be moving at any real clip. None of that is unique to this bike; it's just the difference between a fun descent and a scary one. Ride the hill in both directions with a little respect and it's all upside.

Rider Weight, the 500-Watt Motor, and Picking the Right E-Bike

Now let's talk about why this climb went the way it did, and how to use that when you're choosing your own e-bike. Two things decided the outcome on my hill: the motor and the rider. Me being 230 pounds, and the bike having a 500-watt motor.

Why 500 watts is the do-it-all size

Of the motor sizes we offer, 500 watts is the one I point most riders toward, because it's versatile. It's strong enough to climb real hills and smooth enough to be pleasant on flat ground. A smaller motor is lovely on level streets and for lighter riders, but ask it to haul a heavier rider up a steep grade and you'll feel it working. A bigger motor gives you more punch, but you don't always need it, and more power can mean a bigger, pricier battery. Five hundred watts sits right in the middle: enough muscle for the hills, enough restraint to sip battery when you dial the assist back. On my climb it had a clear margin left even with me on it, which is exactly what you want from a motor you'll ride for years.

Weight is the number that matters most

If there's one factor that decides how a bike handles hills, it's rider weight, and it's why I keep hammering my own. The heavier you are, the harder the motor works on a grade, simple as that. That's why I test as the heavy end of the range: it shows you the honest floor of the bike's performance. Here's the rule of thumb I give people. If you're a lighter rider who mostly stays on flat ground, you have room to consider a smaller motor. If you're heavier, or your routes are hilly, or both, step up to 500 watts or more so the bike isn't straining. At 230 pounds on a steep San Clemente climb, 500 watts was plenty. Read your own weight and your own terrain honestly, and let those two numbers guide you.

A quick word on battery

Motor size and battery go hand in hand. A bigger, more powerful motor generally wants a bigger battery to feed it, and how far any battery takes you depends on the same factors that affect speed: your weight, your hills, and how hard you lean on the throttle. If your trips stay short, a modest battery is plenty. If you're planning long outings, look for a larger one and know it may nudge the price up.
