Are throttles on e-bikes dangerous? Hey everyone, I'm Dustin. I have nearly 20 years of experience in the bike and e-bike industry. Today we're going to answer the question, are throttles on e-bikes dangerous? I've got two of our e-bikes, our Relax Body 20 inch with office chair and our EVRYjourney 500 watt, two of our more popular e-bikes. Don't forget, if you want to come for a test ride, we are at 1046 Calle Recoto Unit K in San Clemente, California, and we also ship nationwide. Now, Many e-bikes and e-trikes are also coming with throttles these days. Two types of throttles on an e-bike. There's a push throttle that you would press with your thumb. Typically, those are located on the left hand, or there are twist throttles, which are typically located on your right hand, and you twist for it to go. And actually, this one's on, which is one of the things we should talk about, always having that off. Now, are they dangerous? Well... Of course, anything is dangerous if improperly used, right? Or it can be dangerous if improperly used.
In the case of a throttle, the two biggest issues, or one biggest issue I see is when people are getting on and off of their e-bike, they may accidentally hit the throttle with their thumb, or in a lot of cases, people go to push their e-bike or park it, and they accidentally twist the throttle. This is why when I'm educating about e-bikes, I always teach to turn the motor off whenever mounting or dismounting. So anytime you are pushing the bike, unless you strategically want to use the throttle to help get the e-bike up a hill while you're pushing it, anytime you're off the e-bike, turn the motor off. Anytime you're getting on or getting off, turn the motor off. Once you're on, seated, and prepared to ride, at that point, you can turn it on, engage it, and the throttle will be live, active, and ready to be twisted or pushed for the e-bike to go. Generally, if you follow that protocol, throttles are gonna be safe and a great tool to be utilized on your e-bike rides. Many people like to use the throttle to help them get up and moving, also on hills, or just to give their legs a break while they're out for long-distance rides. It's nice.
You take a break, use a throttle, let your legs catch, you know, some recovery, and then when you're ready to pedal again, you can go ahead and do it. So I do feel like the throttle's benefits far outweigh the risks, and the risks can easily be mitigated with proper education and proper usage while you're on your e-bike. The only other instance that I see a throttle can be an issue is if someone's riding and they accidentally go to hit the brake, and they may engage the throttle while they meant to hit the brake. Now, again, this is something with proper training and education, and just giving yourself patience while you get used to all the instruments on an e-bike, and as you start to get used to pulling the brake, not hitting the throttle or not twisting, it'll become more second nature for you. So my only suggestion is as you get used to your e-bike with a throttle, just make sure you take your time.
You figure out the brakes and go slower. A lot of times, accidents occur when somebody gets on an e-bike and they just get out zooming around, and all of a sudden they think they know everything and they hit the throttle, something bad happens, right? So take your time, and be patient, and as you get used to riding, it'll be a safe experience, I promise. So if you have any other questions at all, reach out to us at theteam@sixthreezero.com.
