My trike won't turn. Is something wrong with it? Stick around to find out.
Hey, everyone, I'm Dustin. I've nearly 20 years of experience in the bike and e-bike industry. Today we're going to talk about why won't your tricycle turn. But before I get into it, hit that Subscribe button below. Stay in touch with us here at sixthreezero. Be the first to know about all the new content we're putting out, giveaways we do, and of course, new product releases. All right, and right before I get into everything, these three trikes right here, our LinkedIn description below from sixthreezero, our EVRYjourney Electric Trike, our Rickshaw for passengers, and our foldable 750-watt e-trike, LinkedIn description below. Also linked in the corner of this video if you want to check them out.
All right, let's say you just test-rode a trike, or you just got back, you bought a trike for the first time in years, and you're having trouble steering. Now, you're not alone, and most likely nothing is wrong with your tricycle at all. Now, with one caveat, if you're having actual issues with the trike not steering, let's say the handlebars are loose, check all the bolts up here and make sure that it has nothing to do with the actual functionality.
The reality is, I hear a lot of people say that something's wrong with the trike because they tell me the trike is pulling them. The trike is pulling them, and the reality is, it's not pulling them. It's that the bike, or the trike, I should say, is going a certain direction, and they're leaning in the other direction, realizing that the trike's not moving. So in their mind, they think the trike is taking them, but it's because of one simple thing, which is that they're not turning the wheel. The big thing is, that riders who have not been on a bicycle in 20, 30, or 40 years don't realize that riding three-wheel bikes is much different than riding a two-wheel bike. And even if you tell them that, their brain needs to comprehend what exactly that means.
What happens is, when they get on, they take a test ride here, they're going straight and they start to lean and the bike doesn't move, they think the trike is going the direction it wants to go because they're leaning and the trike's not going with them, when in reality they need to steer the trike and turn the wheels. A major difference between a trike and a two-wheel bike, trikes do not turn and do not go in the direction you want them to go, if you don't turn the wheels.
Now, on a two-wheel bike, you do have to turn the wheel, but it's very slight in a lot of situations, right? It's more of a body lean where you're swaying and moving with the two wheels, right, more fluid. Trikes are not fluid in that way. You turn the wheel, you go. You turn the wheel, you go, very much like a car. In order for a car to turn, you have to turn the wheel. Leaning your body weight in a car is not going to make your car turn. So, it's not the trike that has any kind of steering issues. Unfortunately, it is an operator error. But I've seen this countless times. I've done hundreds of test rides with people who are getting back into bike riding and they opt for a trike. Maybe for those over the age of 55, 60, or 70, three wheels are safer. You're more balanced. It's a good option if you don't feel confident enough to be on two wheels anymore, but just realize that just because you were able to ride a two-wheel bike doesn't mean you're going to be able to easily ride a three-wheel bike right away.
Now, riding a three-wheel bike is very easy. It's just the fact that our brain is telling us to do something that's not conducive to how you ride a tricycle. But once you can let go of your past habits and your bike riding habits and understand that that's how you steer, you'll realize that the trike is not turning left or the trike is not steering incorrectly. And once you figure it out, it's very simple, very easy. You can check out tons of videos on our YouTube channel of seeing other riders experience a trike for the first time. You'll see many go from never riding a trike to up and running in no time.
