Scottdale's Best Biking Paths

Scottsdale, located just 12 miles northeast of downtown Phoenix, has a reputation for stellar golf courses and incredible spas. But if you’re in the area and looking to burn a few more calories, you’re certainly in luck. The upscale neighborhood also has several trails and pathways where you can put your bike tires to the pavement (or dirt, in some cases). Here are three of the best Scottsdale bike trails:

  1. Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt

Distance: 11 miles

This easy ride will take you through the heart of Scottsdale. The Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt runs north and south, passing either through or adjacent to everything from Mountain View Park and the McCormick Ranch Golf Course to the Civic Center Mall. You’ll also pass the Civic Center Library and the Indian School Park and Tennis Center. If you’re looking for a fun city ride, you won’t find a better option in Scottsdale than this jaunt. You can view and play with the interactive map for the Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt here.

  1. Mountain Vista Bike Tour

Distance: 2.3 miles

In a bid to encourage more biking in Scottsdale, the city has begun to introduce some self-guided bike tours. One of these is the Mountain Vista Bike Tour, which is a complete loop beginning and ending at the intersection of Main Street and Brown Avenue. The journey includes two stops at art displays, where creative frames have been installed to provide unique and interpretive views of the neighboring mountains. The route has signs to guide you the entire way and is paved for easy travels. When you’re done with your short jaunt, you’ll be located conveniently near many of the city’s restaurants for a relaxing refuel.

  1. Tom’s Thumb

Distance: 5 miles

Are you up for a challenge? If the self-guided or paved trails of Scottsdale aren’t enough to quench your thirst for a cycling adventure, the Tom’s Thumb trail might do the trick. Ideal for experts, this journey takes you through the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. You’ll spot desert wildflowers, rock formations, and other desert scenery along the way. You can reach the trailhead for this route on N 128th Street right in Scottsdale – be sure to bring plenty of water, especially in the summer. The trail may be short, but it still brings the heat.
