Seattle is a bike-friendly environment, and despite its reputation for being so rainy, there are still plenty of days that are ideal for riding. Whether you’re commuting to work or spending your Sunday afternoon unplugged – getting to know the Emerald City on your two-wheeler is a real joy. Let’s take a look at a beginner’s guide to biking in Seattle for those of us who are new to exploring this city by cycle.
How can you remain safe on your rides through Seattle? Aside from your helmet, following the rules for bike riders is essential. The city has provided a helpful guide to the basic laws for cyclists. Some of the laws include using the bike lane whenever it’s available, sticking to the right side of the road when you’re slower than the “reasonable flow of traffic,” and using hand signals when turning and stopping. You can also ride on the sidewalk in Seattle whenever it’s prudent and safe to do so.
SDOT (the Seattle Department of Transportation), has a bike web map that shows you everywhere biking infrastructure exists in the city. The map includes protected bike lanes, multi-use trails, neighborhood greenways, and other bike facilities. If you’re just getting started and want to know where to bike in Seattle, the bike map is a good place to start. Of course, the surrounding area also has a bevy of bike trails and excursions in nature.
Some of the best bike trails in Seattle are not found amid the city streets. The loops around Seward Park and the Washington Arboretum are easy and perfect for a quick Saturday excursion. For a longer journey, hop on the Interurban Trail (North) for a 24-mile ride between the north end of Greenwood Park and Snohomish River in Everett. When you need a breath of fresh air, hitting up one of the many lakeside or forest trails in the Seattle area is just what the doctor ordered. Just be sure to watch out for pedestrians, because many of the trails are multi-use and frequented by hikers and joggers.
