Best Bikes for Men of Large Stature
Finding the right bicycle is a tall order for anyone, but it’s especially challenging when you’re literally tall. Men of large stature may find that the average bike doesn’t support their frame or makes them hunch over to hold the handles. Some of our bikes, including the sixthreezero Around the Block Men’s 26" 7-speed and BE man 1-speed can accommodate builds up to six feet. sixthreezero also has bikes that accommodate an even bigger person. Here are some things to look for when you’re finding a bike as a larger man.
Finding the Right Frame Size
The best bikes for men with a large stature are, no surprise, larger than the best bikes for a short person. As you’re determining which size bike to buy, one of the best things to do is measure your own leg inseam. Take a fabric tape measure and mark the length between the very top of your leg and the top of your foot. For a man who is 6’2”, this will be about 35 inches.
With your inseam in mind, you’re ready to find a bike frame that will support you. If your inseam is 35 inches or more, the ideal bike frame is at least 25 inches (bike measurements consider the length of the seat tube). You may also want to consider the material of the bike frame. Steel and titanium do a great job of supporting riders with a larger stature.
Considering Seat Size
Men’s bicycles with an extra-wide saddle design will make it much easier to take long bike rides in comfort. We all know the feeling of having our backside go numb during a bicycle trip, and it’s the worst. Aside from getting a wider saddle, there are a few factors you can consider when selecting a seat:
- Shell material: The core of a bike seat is called a shell. Most bike seats are made from molded plastic, but some leather seats have no shell at all – they use a taut piece of leather strung between the seat frame. Bike seat shells with a groove or hole in the middle will relieve pressure for large stature riders.
- Padding: Extra padding on your seat helps you feel like you’re riding on a cloud. The padding on many sixthreezero saddles is designed with foam that has been engineered for comfort. As someone with a large stature, you should choose a well-padded seat to support your size in comfort.
