I have 20 years of experience in the bike and e-bike industry, and today I'm going to tell you and show you what not to do when riding an e-bike uphill. Today I'm on the Simple step through a 750-watt e-bike. It's an awesome e-bike, really powerful, with three-inch wide tires, 14 amp-hour batteries. So gonna take on a hill here, and for everyone at home, oh, it's not a hill. This is actually a pretty substantial hill. It's a pretty decent grade, probably about a 10% grade, decent length. This would be a very challenging hill without an electric on your e-bike, without an electric on your bike. Now, when going up a hill on an electric bike, you want to do a couple of things. Now, number one, if you're going to use pedal assist the whole way, then you want to keep pedaling because obviously if you stop pedaling, the motor is going to stop, and then you're going to lose a lot of momentum. So the one thing you don't want to do is exactly what I just said. If you're in pedal assist and pedaling, you don't want to stop pedaling.

Now, I guess that sounds intuitive, right? Because you wouldn't stop pedaling on a regular bike either. But you may get the illusion that the electricity will come on. So what you want to do is if you're going to let up pedaling, you want to engage the throttle before you stop pedaling. That way, you have a seamless transition from getting the pedal assistance, getting the usage of the motor while you pedal, to the throttle.
","heading":"","layoutId":"paragraph-section","variants":{}},{"id":"c5834bbf-b3f6-4d42-928d-ec5a311a3eef","bikes":[{"id":"f71473c6-21b9-49a0-8825-13528aa9f781","value":{"entry":{"entryId":"720Vd8ciJIeNagJmw6vVFX"}}}],"layoutId":"bike-listing","variants":{}},{"id":"adf5848a-2b19-4104-ad0d-1d4c9114e533","body":"
Now, this goes for the reverse of that, too. So what you don't want to do is if you're going up the hill with just the throttle, you don't want to let the throttle off and then start pedaling. You want to start pedaling, then let off the throttle. That way, you don't get any backwards momentum and possibly cause yourself an injury or crash or something. So again, if you're going to throttle only up the hill and you let off the throttle, you're going to go backwards, right? So you want to make sure to start pedaling first, then let off the throttle. I'm going to demonstrate both scenarios for you here. And my first run up, I will do throttle only, and I'll show you exactly what I mean as I climb this hill. Okay. So let me get in position here. All right, so I'm gonna go throttle only, okay? All right. And now I'm ascending. Here we go. And now, if I want to let off the throttle, let me start pedaling. Now I let off the throttle, and I have a nice transition. Now, there's going to be some transition between the motor sensing the pedal assist as you let off the throttle. So just be aware of that.

There's going to be a little hiccup. Now, if you don't want to experience that hiccup, either throttle the entire way or do pedal assist the entire way. Now, if you just noticed, I transitioned from the pedal assist to the throttle. Now there's a much more seamless transition in doing that. So I was pedaling, and then I hit the throttle, and it was almost no hiccup. Now, going from the pedal assist to the throttle, or sorry, from the throttle to the pedal assist, there was a little bit of a hiccup because the motor has to then sense the turning of the pedals to engage.
","heading":"","layoutId":"paragraph-section","variants":{}},{"id":"ecd25f21-04ea-46a9-a090-b0302f5409e2","image":{"assetId":"6BX4Xpy7IPRXnnQJ2ISHCR","options":{"backgroundSize":"cover"},"mobileAssetId":"","mobileOptions":{"backgroundSize":"cover"}},"layoutId":"full-width-image-with-out-bleed","variants":{}},{"id":"bb680cde-4021-4225-a5ad-db215e159f5e","body":"
So let's go back down to the bottom of the hill, and we'll do another run up. Okay, I'll use my throttle. Okay, now I'm gonna go pedal assist. There we go. All right, now you can see again, when I go from throttle to pedal assist, there's a hiccup. All right, now I'm in pedal assist. I'm gonna engage my throttle, and then I'm gonna stop pedaling, seamless transition. Now again, from the opposite, I start pedaling, and I let off the throttle. Look, it takes the motor a second to recognize that. So a better transition on hills would be to go from pedal assist to throttle, not throttle to pedal assist.

If you just want to keep your momentum going up the hill. And of course, the 750-watt makes it simple for me, even at 230 pounds, we cruise right up. Okay, so when riding up a hill, just remember, it's better if you start in pedal assist and transition to throttle versus going to throttle to pedal assist. You're gonna have a little hiccup and a little delay between the time the motor recognizes you're now switching to pedal assist. Also, at no point should you let off of any of the electricity if you're already using it, because again, you're gonna start to feel it pull you backwards.
","heading":"","layoutId":"paragraph-section","variants":{}},{"id":"619dda9f-1346-4dea-80b7-4cca2ad6bf7a","image":{"assetId":"4pNrTJkO8toK9bevx8Kzgz","options":{"backgroundSize":"cover"},"mobileAssetId":"","mobileOptions":{"backgroundSize":"cover"}},"layoutId":"full-width-image-with-out-bleed","variants":{}},{"id":"e93165f3-cb8d-4888-9eb5-ed08be848164","body":"
So any other questions at all on the topic, please comment below or reach out to us at theteam@sixthreezero.com or call us, 310-982-2877.
