Some mornings it's stiff and slow to warm up. Some days it barely bends at all. If you've had surgery, there may be a range of motion your surgeon or physical therapist has asked you to stay inside for months. And if you have arthritis, you've probably learned exactly which movements will cost you for the rest of the afternoon.

None of that means you have to stop riding. Cycling is one of the activities people with knee trouble hear recommended most often, because it's low impact and keeps the joint moving without the pounding that comes from walking downhill or jogging. The catch is that not every bike, or every trike, treats a bad knee the same way. The shape of the frame, where the pedals sit, and how high the seat is all decide how much your knee has to bend on every pedal stroke, and how hard it is to get on and off in the first place.

That's the question Dustin, our head fit specialist with 20 years in the bike and eBike industry, tackled in a recent video. He lined up three of our electric rides side by side and explained why, for riders with stiff knees, arthritis, or a surgically repaired knee, his recommendation comes down to one family of designs: recumbents. This article expands on that conversation, walks through his reasoning step by step, and adds the practical detail you'll want before you choose.

One note before we start. We fit bikes; we don't treat knees. If you're recovering from surgery or managing a diagnosed condition, check with your doctor or physical therapist about how much bend and load your knee is ready for. Everything below should make that conversation more useful, because you'll know exactly what to ask.
","id":"b8b6bf17-863e-48be-b26b-73b5f01cea22"},{"id":"829332e0-26e1-4326-bd7e-684bfa6650ee","layoutId":"related-bikes","variants":{},"bikes":[{"id":"cfd9e90d-7e9f-444f-84c4-392346a0ed62","value":{"entry":{"entryId":"6GVrQWTXmJF0iGrf99PyUF"},"score":"97","logo":{"assetId":"1RX3Ask17Hc67nesD9RbzU"},"customBikeURL":""}},{"id":"8702138f-0d8d-432f-89e6-47464470cada","value":{"entry":{"entryId":"3cxCCJ696ANbddNt0S691u"},"score":"98","logo":{"assetId":"1RX3Ask17Hc67nesD9RbzU"}}},{"id":"86d1f839-7f2a-4c52-91b8-075e765b5363","value":{"entry":{"entryId":"26Lgro1tcp3cXBvIm8XmBY"},"logo":{"assetId":"1RX3Ask17Hc67nesD9RbzU"},"score":"99.4"}}]},{"layoutId":"paragraph-section","variants":{},"heading":"The Short Answer: Start With Recumbents","body":"
If you only read one section, make it this one. Dustin's suggestion for riders with bad knees is some form of recumbent trike, and that covers two broad styles.

The first is a semi-recumbent, like our Relaxed Body. From a distance it looks a lot like a standard upright tricycle. You sit fairly straight, the seat is at a comfortable height, and the handlebars sweep back toward you. The difference is that the pedals have been moved forward, out in front of your body instead of directly beneath it.

The second is a full recumbent, like our ANYterrain four-wheel recumbent or our EVRYjourney recumbent rickshaw. Here the seat leans back further and the pedals reach out even farther in front of you. Your legs push forward more than they push down.

Both styles solve the two problems that make standard trikes frustrating for people with knee issues: they give you full leg extension without perching on a tall seat, and they keep the seat at a height that's easy to sit down on and stand up from. You can browse the whole range in our recumbent electric trikes collection, but it helps to understand why the design works before you start comparing models.
","id":"97e8dfee-f212-43dd-87e6-a488ccf2ef0a"},{"layoutId":"paragraph-section","variants":{},"heading":"Two Problems Bad Knees Create on a Trike","body":"
When Dustin talks with riders who have arthritis or a history of knee surgery, two issues come up again and again.

The first is bend. Every pedal stroke takes your knee through a cycle. It opens up as the pedal reaches the far end of its path and folds closed as the pedal comes back toward you. If your knee is stiff, the closed part of that cycle is usually the hard part. Forcing a joint that doesn't want to fold past a certain angle, a few hundred times every mile, is a reliable way to end up with a sore evening. What riders with limited flexion really need is a setup where the leg stays longer through more of the stroke, so the knee never has to close as tightly.

The second is mounting and dismounting. It's easy to overlook because it only happens at the start and end of a ride, but for a lot of people it's the real barrier. If getting on the trike means hoisting yourself onto a high seat, or getting off means dropping down and catching your weight on a bad leg, you're simply less likely to ride. The ride itself might feel great. It's the first and last ten seconds that keep the trike parked in the garage.

The tricky part is that on a traditional upright trike, these two problems pull in opposite directions. Fixing one tends to make the other worse. That tension is the key to Dustin's whole recommendation, so it's worth slowing down on.
","id":"8db1c97d-8d56-4f0e-8343-433dd559b70a"},{"layoutId":"full-width-image-with-out-bleed","variants":{},"image":{"assetId":"6Tofbra3vF4wvts6SgKeYM","options":{"backgroundSize":"cover"},"mobileAssetId":"","mobileOptions":{"backgroundSize":"cover"}},"id":"fae67d7b-136d-4ae4-a64c-854727622603"},{"layoutId":"paragraph-section","variants":{},"heading":"The Upright Trike Trade-Off","body":"
On a traditional upright tricycle, the pedals sit more or less directly below the seat. That's a perfectly good arrangement for many riders, and it's a big reason upright trikes are so popular. But think about what it means for leg extension.

The distance between the seat and the pedal at the bottom of its stroke determines how straight your leg gets. On an upright trike, that distance is almost entirely vertical. So the only way to give your leg more extension, and your knee less bend, is to raise the seat. Raise it high enough to keep a stiff knee comfortable and you've created a new problem: now you have to climb up onto that seat.

As Dustin explains it, many people with bad knees find it hard to get onto the seat at the height they actually need for proper extension. They're forced into a compromise. Leave the seat low, and mounting is easy but every pedal stroke folds the knee tighter than it wants to go. Raise the seat, and the pedaling feels better but getting on and off turns into an awkward and sometimes risky maneuver.

For riders whose knees bend reasonably well, there's usually a workable middle ground, which is why our easy-to-mount eTrikes with low step-through frames suit so many people. But for someone whose knee only bends so far, the seat height that would make pedaling comfortable on an upright can end up so high that, in Dustin's view, the trike may not be rideable for them at all.

That's a frustrating place to be. It's also exactly the problem recumbent geometry was built to solve.
","id":"1b0ba8bf-783d-4d3c-92f2-1828d14390b4"},{"layoutId":"paragraph-section","variants":{},"heading":"Moving the Pedals Forward Changes Everything","body":"
Here's the simple idea behind every recumbent and semi-recumbent: instead of putting the pedals below you, put them in front of you.

Once the pedals move forward, the distance between your hip and the pedal is no longer just vertical. Part of it is horizontal. That means you can get the same leg extension, or more, without raising the seat. The seat can stay at a comfortable, moderate height, and your legs still reach out far enough to keep the knee from folding tightly on each stroke.

Dustin puts it plainly: with a semi-recumbent or recumbent, the seat can sit lower, and when you sit down you still get proper leg extension because the pedals are out in front. You no longer have to pick between an easy mount and a comfortable knee. You get both.

There's a second, quieter benefit. On an upright trike, your body weight sits on top of the pedals, and many riders end up stomping down hard, especially when starting from a stop. On a recumbent, you're supported by a seat back and pushing forward. A lot of riders find that motion smoother and more controlled, and the seat back gives you something solid to press against so your legs aren't also working to hold your body in place.

It's also worth remembering that every trike in Dustin's video is electric. The motor doesn't change the geometry, but it does change how hard your knee has to work. Pedal assist takes much of the strain out of starts and hills, which are usually the moments that aggravate a sore joint. Pair forward pedals with a motor, and you have a setup that asks very little of a knee that doesn't have much to give.
","id":"234bd869-ba71-4101-b546-66c3780ce753"},{"layoutId":"full-width-image-with-out-bleed","variants":{},"image":{"assetId":"6GXraFrzr4lVvZysHLaMEx","options":{"backgroundSize":"cover"},"mobileAssetId":"","mobileOptions":{"backgroundSize":"cover"}},"id":"65b448af-e095-4e2a-a901-bba2d183b3b7"},{"layoutId":"paragraph-section","variants":{},"heading":"The Semi-Recumbent: Upright Feel, Knee-Friendly Pedals","body":"
The first trike Dustin walks over to is the Relaxed Body, our 750-watt semi-recumbent electric tricycle. If you like the look and feel of an upright trike, this is the style to start with.

At a glance it really does resemble a standard upright. You sit fairly tall, which many riders like for visibility and for keeping an eye on the path ahead. The seat sits around chair height, so you can step in and sit down much the way you'd sit at a kitchen table. The big change is down at your feet, where the crank and pedals have been pushed out ahead of the seat.

That forward shift is enough to make a real difference for many riders with knee stiffness. You can set the seat at a height that's easy to get on and off, and still have your leg reach most of the way out at the far end of the stroke. For someone whose knee bends reasonably well but complains when pushed, or someone who simply wants an easier mount without giving up comfortable pedaling, a semi-recumbent is a very sensible middle ground.

Semi-recumbents also tend to feel familiar right away. There's less of a learning curve than with a more reclined trike, which matters if you're returning to riding after a long break or after surgery. If you've ridden an upright trike before, you'll likely feel at home on a semi-recumbent within the first few minutes.

If comfort is your top priority, take a look at our most comfortable electric trikes as well. Many riders with knee issues are also managing back or hip concerns, and seat shape and posture matter just as much as pedal position.
","id":"b4f8e581-a4fb-46b1-80cf-9456267bc862"},{"layoutId":"paragraph-section","variants":{},"heading":"Full Recumbents: More Forward, More Extension","body":"
Next in the lineup is the ANYterrain, our four-wheel, 750-watt recumbent eBike. Set next to the Relaxed Body, the difference is obvious. The forward pedaling is far more pronounced, with the pedals well out in front of the rider and the seat leaning back to match.

This is where full recumbents really earn their place for knees that barely bend. Dustin is direct about it: if your knee is really stiff and you can't get much bend out of it, you need to make sure you're getting a lot of extension on that pedal. With the pedals this far forward and a seat that adjusts fore and aft, a full recumbent gives you room to set your leg nearly straight at the far end of the stroke, so the knee only has to fold a little as the pedal comes back around.

The four-wheel layout adds another layer of reassurance. With a wheel at each corner, the ANYterrain feels planted. There's no balancing to think about at stops, and the stable platform makes it easier to settle into the seat without the trike shifting underneath you. If stability is high on your list, our four-wheel eBikes are worth a close look.

One point Dustin makes that's easy to miss: you don't have to ride with the seat reclined as far as it goes. A full recumbent doesn't force you into a lie-back position. You can bring the seat up to something more upright and still keep the pedals well forward. Plenty of people want to get back on three wheels not just for exercise, but to spend time outside with a spouse, a grandchild, or a friend who can't or doesn't want to pedal. A recumbent rickshaw lets the rider keep a knee-friendly position while bringing a passenger, with the motor helping handle the extra weight so your legs aren't straining to get things rolling.

If that sounds like you, our eBike rickshaws and our broader collection of trikes for passengers are good places to compare options. Here Dustin offers both a guideline and an important caveat.

The guideline comes from the performance side of cycling. From a torque perspective, you generally want a little bend left in your knee at the most extended point of the pedal stroke. A leg that locks completely straight can't push effectively, and reaching for the pedal can make your hips rock on the seat. A slight bend keeps the muscles engaged and the motion smooth. It's the same principle fitters use for everyday riders and commuters, and it's a good place to start.

The caveat matters just as much: this is personal. A rule of thumb built around power output isn't the most important thing when your knee hurts. What counts is whatever feels right for you, so you can actually get out and ride. If a little more extension than the textbook suggests keeps your knee happy, that's the right setting. If your physical therapist wants you working within a particular range, set the trike up to match it.

Here's a helpful way to think about it. The closed part of the pedal stroke, when your foot is nearest to you, is the part most likely to stress a stiff knee. The open part, when your leg reaches out, is where you decide how straight feels comfortable. More distance between seat and pedals means a straighter leg at the far end and less bend at the near end. Less distance means the opposite. Adjust until the near end of the stroke feels easy and the far end still feels like pushing rather than reaching.

Start conservatively. It's usually better to begin with a touch more extension than you think you need, ride for a few days, and then fine-tune. Knees often tell you more the morning after a ride than they do during it.
","id":"e41d1b90-f211-4392-925c-bdf20b03f810"},{"layoutId":"full-width-image-with-out-bleed","variants":{},"image":{"assetId":"1i0xwh2EbbD2jllsHkwlv0","options":{"backgroundSize":"cover"},"mobileAssetId":"","mobileOptions":{"backgroundSize":"cover"}},"id":"84ba4c79-da34-4e4b-94da-93cd9aa8030c"},{"layoutId":"paragraph-section","variants":{},"heading":"Dialing In the Seat","body":"
On a recumbent, the seat is your main tool for setting extension. In the video, Dustin demonstrates pulling the seat back along the frame to open up the distance to the pedals. Because the seat moves forward and back, you can find the position that stretches your knee out to a point that feels good rather than one that strains it.

Recline is the other variable. Leaning the seat back changes the angle between your torso and legs, which affects how your hips and knees move together. Some riders find a more reclined seat takes pressure off the knee; others prefer to sit more upright for comfort and a better view of the road. Dustin's point is that there's no single correct angle. You might want it laid back a fair amount or only a little.

A few tips for getting the seat right:

Make one change at a time. If you slide the seat and change the recline in the same adjustment, you won't know which one helped or hurt. Move in small steps and ride a short loop after each change.

Check the near end of the stroke. Sit on the trike with the brakes on and slowly rotate a pedal to the point where it comes closest to you. That's your maximum knee bend. If it feels tight or pinchy, slide the seat back a notch.

Check the far end of the stroke. Now rotate the pedal to its farthest point. Your leg should be long and relaxed, ideally with a slight bend. If you're pointing your toes to stay on the pedal or shifting your hips, the seat has gone too far back.

Think about both knees. If one knee is the problem, it's natural to set the trike up entirely around it, and that's often the right call. Just make sure the healthy side isn't being pushed into an awkward position. Most riders can find a setting that serves both.

If the seat itself is part of the discomfort, explore the options in our sixthreezero seats collection. You'd be sitting so high that mounting would feel like climbing onto a bar stool, and getting off would mean dropping down onto a leg that may not want to take the impact. For someone with a really stiff knee, upright geometry can't deliver comfortable pedaling and a safe mount at the same time.

That doesn't make upright trikes a bad choice in general. For many riders, including plenty with mild knee aches, a step-through upright with a sensible seat height is perfect. Our electric trikes for seniors include several designed with easy mounting in mind. Some recumbents put the seat very close to the ground, low-slung designs where you're sitting just above the pavement. They handle the extension problem nicely. But they can create a different one.

With a full lay-down recumbent, the seat is much lower. Your challenge is no longer getting off a high seat. It's getting up from a low one.

Dustin's test for this is one almost everyone can relate to: the couch. If you struggle to get up once you've sunk into a deep couch, if you need someone to give you a hand or you have to really push yourself up, you probably don't want a recumbent that sits super low to the ground. Standing up from a low position asks a lot of the knee. It has to bear your weight while folded at a sharp angle, which is exactly the position a stiff or arthritic knee likes least.

That's why Dustin prefers recumbents with the seat at roughly chair height, like the Relaxed Body and the ANYterrain. At chair height, getting on and off becomes, in his words, super easy. You sit down onto the seat the way you'd sit on a dining chair, and you stand up the same way, feet under you and knees at a comfortable angle. Meanwhile, the forward pedals still give you the extension you need, and the seat still slides forward and back so you can fine-tune it.

So when you compare recumbents, ask two questions instead of one. How far forward are the pedals? And how high is the seat? The best trike for bad knees answers both well: pedals far enough forward to keep the knee open, and a seat high enough to sit down and stand up without strain.
","id":"8040dccd-2eda-4ca1-aff4-198066bed704"},{"layoutId":"paragraph-section","variants":{},"heading":"Other Features That Make Life Easier on Your Knees","body":"
Frame geometry does the heavy lifting, and it's the focus of Dustin's video. But a few other features can make a noticeable difference for riders with knee problems, so they're worth weighing as you compare.

Electric assist. This is the big one. Pedal assist adds motor power whenever you pedal, which cuts down the force your knee has to produce. Starts from a stop and climbs are where a sore knee usually complains most, and they're exactly where the motor helps most. Use a higher assist level on a bad knee day and dial it back when you feel good.

Throttle. A throttle lets you get the trike moving without pedaling. For riders with knee pain, that's a real help when pulling away from a stop or crossing an intersection, and some riders use it to give the knee a short break mid-ride. You can compare models in our electric trikes with throttle control collection.

Reverse. Backing a trike out of a garage or a tight parking space usually means getting off and pushing, or shuffling it backward with your feet, and both are awkward on a bad knee. A reverse function lets you skip that. Our reverse-gear electric trikes are worth a look if you'll be parking in tight spots.

Gearing and cadence. If your trike has multiple gears, a lower gear lets you spin the pedals faster with less force on each stroke. Many people with knee trouble find a light, quick cadence far gentler than grinding in a hard gear. Combine an easy gear with moderate assist and the motion starts to feel a lot like a stationary bike set to low resistance.

A stable, sturdy frame. A solid frame lets you lower yourself onto the seat with confidence. If you need a higher rated capacity, our high weight capacity electric trikes are built for it.
","id":"1105aa8d-ec9a-4dfc-8498-a1461b2e1801"},{"layoutId":"full-width-image-with-out-bleed","variants":{},"image":{"assetId":"1iyHZFjFeCq6aBGOUvgspX","options":{"backgroundSize":"cover"},"mobileAssetId":"","mobileOptions":{"backgroundSize":"cover"}},"id":"8a2f0cda-a2c3-4d66-a089-2f0c850abb42"},{"layoutId":"paragraph-section","variants":{},"heading":"Matching the Design to Your Situation","body":"
Every knee is different, but a few general patterns can help you narrow things down before you reach out or book a test ride.

General stiffness or mild arthritis. If your knee still bends reasonably well but complains when pushed or folded tightly, a semi-recumbent like the Relaxed Body is often a great fit. You keep a familiar upright posture, the seat stays at a manageable height, and the forward pedals ease the bend at the top of each stroke.

Significant stiffness or limited range of motion. If your knee doesn't bend much at all, lean toward a full recumbent with more pronounced forward pedaling, like the ANYterrain. The extra reach to the pedals keeps your leg long through the stroke, and the adjustable seat lets you control exactly how far your knee has to fold.

After knee surgery. Recovery usually comes with a range of motion that improves over time. A recumbent with an adjustable seat can grow with you: start with the seat slid well back for plenty of extension, then bring it forward over the following weeks or months as your flexibility returns. Follow your surgeon's or physical therapist's guidance on when to start riding and how much bend is safe.

Trouble standing up from low seats. If getting out of a deep couch is a struggle, stick with chair-height recumbents and skip low-slung lay-down designs. Getting on and off comfortably matters as much as how the pedaling feels.

Balance concerns on top of knee issues. Any trike removes the balancing act of a two-wheeler, but if you're especially uneasy, a four-wheel design adds extra steadiness at stops and while you're getting on and off.

Riding with company. If you'd like to bring a passenger, a recumbent rickshaw keeps your knee-friendly position while making room for someone else.

Not sure where you fit? Here's what we suggest to riders whose knees need a gentle start.

Keep the first rides short. Ten or fifteen minutes on a flat, quiet route is plenty. You're getting used to a new riding position, and your knee is getting used to a new range of motion. Let both settle in before adding distance.

Use the motor generously. There's no prize for riding on the lowest assist level. Let the motor do more of the work early on, then reduce it gradually as your legs get stronger and your knee adapts.

Warm up slowly. Spin the pedals in an easy gear for the first few minutes. Stiff joints usually loosen as they warm, and easing in is far kinder than pushing hard from the first block.

Listen to the next morning. If your knee is sore the day after, ride a little shorter next time or revisit your seat position. If it feels fine, add a few minutes. Small, consistent changes add up.

Practice getting on and off. It sounds almost too simple, but spend a few minutes sitting down on and standing up from the parked trike with the brakes on. Find a method that keeps your weight centered and your bad knee comfortable. Once it becomes habit, it stops being something you think about.

Pick routes that suit your knee. Flat paths, gentle grades, and routes with places to stop are your friends at first. As your confidence grows, you'll find the motor makes it surprisingly easy to go farther. Sitting lower and further back feels different at first, but on three or four wheels there's no balancing involved, so the learning curve is mostly about getting used to the view and the pedal position.

Will I still get exercise if the motor is helping? Yes. You're still pedaling, and you choose how much help the motor gives. Many riders with sore knees actually ride more often and for longer on an eTrike, which adds up to more total activity than they'd manage on a trike without assist.

Can two people with different leg lengths share one recumbent? Usually, because the seat slides forward and back. It's worth checking that the adjustment range covers both riders comfortably, and it helps to mark each person's seat position so switching is quick.

What if my knees change over time? That's one of the best arguments for an adjustable recumbent. Whether your flexibility improves after surgery or your arthritis has good and bad seasons, you can move the seat to match how your knee feels now rather than being stuck with one fixed position.

Do I need special shoes or pedals? Not usually. A supportive, flat-soled shoe with good grip is plenty for most riders. Traditional upright trikes make you trade one for the other, because the only way to add leg extension is to raise the seat.

Recumbents and semi-recumbents break that trade-off by moving the pedals forward. The seat stays at a comfortable height, your leg still gets the extension it needs, and your knee doesn't have to fold as tightly on each stroke. A semi-recumbent like the Relaxed Body keeps a familiar upright feel. A full recumbent like the ANYterrain pushes the pedals further forward for knees with very limited bend. And a recumbent rickshaw like the EVRYjourney brings the same benefits to riders who want to carry a passenger.

Whatever you choose, look for a seat around chair height rather than one close to the ground, and take the time to adjust it until the pedal stroke feels easy at the near end and relaxed at the far end. A little bend at full extension is a good starting point, but in the end the right setting is the one that lets you keep riding.

Your knees may set some of the rules.
