Can you go 20 miles an hour on a fat tire e-bike?
Hey, everyone, I'm Dustin. Today, we're going to show you, can you go 20 miles an hour on a fat tire e-bike? All right, so I'm sitting on the Simple step through 750-watt e-bike, and today we're gonna see if I can get up to 20 miles an hour. Now, there's a 750-watt, three-inch wide tire. A lot of e-bike companies advertise, oh, you can go 20 or 28 in pedal assist, right? I'm almost certain we're not gonna hit 28 miles an hour in pedal assist, but we are gonna put this to a little bit of a speed test here and see if I can't hit 20 miles an hour. So let's go ahead and cruise around and find a nice little straightaway where we can open this up safely. That's a cul-de-sac, so that's not gonna work.
Now, 750 watts is the legal limit here in California. And the 20 miles an hour is also the speed limit, right? So, well, you go up to 28 if you're doing pedal assist. Now, my experience, most e-bikes are not going to hit 28 miles an hour in pedal assist, especially if they have big fat tires, okay? All right, so let's get up here. Get to some flat ground. Now I'm holding the throttle down right here, and I'm going 14 and a half miles an hour. So I think that bodes well for us hitting 20 miles an hour on flat ground. cul de sac, let's turn around. Where are you going? You gonna go? All right, well, cul-de-sac there. That's not gonna work for our speed test.

Now, the one bad part about San Clemente is we've got a lot of hills. All right. Actually, let's just go ahead and go up here. All right, now we've got a little bit of an incline here. I'm gonna go ahead and go full throttle. Oh, you got a car. Okay, let's go for it. So once we get up to this peak right here, we'll be on nice flat ground there. Okay, here we go. Let the speed test begin. Throttle only. Can we get to 20? 16. 17. We're on full flat ground now. So throttle only. I'm 230 pounds. We're at 17 miles an hour. Now, let's go ahead and kick into pedal assist. And let's see, we're at 18 now.
18 and a half. And I'm in the highest gear. So, there you have it. Again, if you were under 200 pounds, you're most likely going to hit 20 miles an hour. I'm 230 pounds. I'm at 17 and a half miles an hour. Throttle only, that is. So, again, you just want to. You know, you have to understand that these are e-bikes. These are not motorcycles, right? And there are limits to how fast they're legally allowed to go and how big the motor sizes can be.

And now down this hill, I'm going to get going 23, 24, 25, and we'll slow down a little bit for safety. So obviously on the downhills, we can get going pretty well there. Come over here and just park, taking in the vistas. So my top speed. Oh, there we go. Use that step-through frame. Top speed was 18 and a half in pedal assist once we got to flat ground, and 17 in a little bit.
With throttle only, again, I'm 230 pounds. So if you were 180, 200, or less, you're gonna be able to get to that 20 miles an hour. But the fat tires slow it down. So if I had the thinner tire version of our simple step-through, I know I can get to 20 on that. So the wider tires do have an impact on your top speed.
