Electric Bike WEIGHT LIMIT

Hey everyone out there. This is Peter Kaltreider with Sixthreezero bicycles, and today let's talk about the weight limit for e-bikes.

All right. So we get this question a lot. What is the weight limit of our e-bikes? How much weight can it carry? So we say 250 pounds is really a good operable weight limit. And there are a few things that are worth talking about here. The main thing is that the main restriction, when you're talking about the weight limit for any bike, is really not the frame. The frames are really quite strong. The weak point tends to be the wheels. And these are actually pretty strong wheels. They have what is called double-wall rims, which are strong. They've built a bridge to add that extra support. But if you are heavier, say if you're exceeding 300 pounds or so, or you expect to carry that much weight, you'll want to get stronger wheels.

That's one reason why mountain bikes cost more, or higher-end mountain bikes, as they have really incredibly strong wheels. Same thing with BMX bikes. There's a video where a couple of kids go and buy a BMX bike from Walmart and they do a trick on it. And as soon as they land, the wheel just toggles. It just completely smooshes like a pancake. It's pretty hilarious. You should look it up. And it's in the first 10 seconds of the video. It's absolutely hilarious. Then they take it back to Walmart and get a full refund, so.

But anyway, these aren't trick bikes. You're not going to be jumping it, but these wheels are strong. However, for a heavier person or for more weight being carried, you do need stronger wheels. Stronger wheels do cost more. With more strength comes more engineering, higher quality materials, all sorts of things like that.

Now, as far as the rear rack goes here, this rear rack is not made for carrying passengers. Please do not carry a passenger on this rear rack. There are bikes made for that, but we don't recommend it for this bike at all. Really, the maximum weight for this would be about 50 pounds, at the most.

So if you want to put a crate on there and carry some groceries, which is a wonderful thing for an e-bike. You can take it, you can use it as a car replacement and take it around, do some shopping or whatever. So you do want to carry some stuff, maybe your books, if you are a student. So yeah, maybe up to 50 pounds. It's rated here 25 kilograms, which is roughly 50, 55 pounds, by all means, do that. But I would not put a passenger on this rack. That's a dangerous idea.

There are some bikes that can be outfitted with a child seat, but this one, because the rack is specially made for the battery right now, cannot be. You could attach an iBert here to the front, I believe, an iBert child seat. So that pretty much covers it for the weight limit on an e-bike. 250 pounds total. Up to 50 pounds on the rear rack. And then if you need a stronger bike it really comes down to the wheels and you need to probably get a mountain bike style wheel.
